SNHU TAKES DOUBLEHEADER FROM DOLPHINS ON SECOND DAY IN MYRTLE BEACH

Myrtle Beach, SC - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team dropped a doubleheader to Southern New Hampshire University earlier today as the Penmen defeated the Dolphins 4-1 and 5-1.  The losses drop the Dolphins to 0-3 on the season and the Penmen improve to 4-1.  SNHU now leads the all-time series 3-1 throughout four meetings across the last two seasons at the Ripken Experience.

GAME 1
SNHU opened game one by threatening in the first inning as the first two batters in the inning reached base.  After a groundout advanced both runners, the Dolphins cut down the game's first run at the plate on a fielder's choice.  Another ground ball ended the inning, and CSI starter Gerard Santos escaped the inning unscathed.  Santos faced more trouble in the second which is when the Penmen scored their first two runs.  A passed ball brought home one and a base hit chased home the second run two batters later.  Trailing 2-0, the Dolphins cut the SNHU lead in half when Chris Polemeni doubled home a run in the third.  Polemeni would ultimately be stranded in scoring position, and this would be the only time the Dolphins would score.

The Penmen added a run in the fifth, but Santos was able to strand a pair on base and keep it a two-run game.  With two on in the next inning, the Dolphins hit into an inning-ending double play ended a potential rally.  The Penmen then added a run in the sixth to go in front 4-1 before ultimately stranding the bases loaded.  The Dolphins would strand two in the seventh, and would later come one batter short of bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth.  Despite matching the SNHU hit total, CSI dropped game one by three, 4-1.

Santos went 5.2 innings in the game one defeat allowing 4 runs on 7 hits.  Christopher Martinez allowed just one hit and struck out three in his CSI debut out of the bullpen.  At the plate, Jack Kehoe went 3-4 with a run scored.

GAME 2
The Dolphins were presented with their best opportunity of the day in the first inning of game two when they loaded the bases with two outs.  However, they failed to score as a fly ball to left ended the inning.  SNHU scored twice in the second, one unearned, to go ahead 2-0 before taking the lead by five with three runs in the fourth.  Trailing 5-0 entering the sixth, a leadoff double by Polemeni set up the first Dolphins run.  Following a groundout and strikeout, Polemeni would come in to score on a wild pitch.  The Penmen would strand two on base in the seventh, and the Dolphins would go down in order during the final half-inning of a 5-1 defeat.

Michael Furst pitched 4.0 innings during his first outing of the season and allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 6 hits.  Ryan Fiore pitched three scoreless innings of relief walking one and striking out two.  Polemeni, John Harrington and Vincent Weigele collected the three CSI hits and Dolphins pitching allowed just six hits in the game.
