BASEBALL EARNS FIRST WIN IN SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST ADELPHI

Myrtle Beach, SC - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team earned their first win of the season earlier today as they split their doubleheader against Adelphi University.  In game one, the Dolphins offense generated six runs in support of Aidan Kielty who picked up his first career win.  In game two, the Panthers scored five in the first on their way to a 10-1 victory.  The Dolphins finish the day 1-4 while the Panthers end the day 2-3.

GAME 1
Game one got off to an electric start as Michael Flashner delivered a sun-assisted inside-the-park home run to put the Dolphins ahead, 1-0.  The Panthers later got even in the third on a wild pitch, but the score didn't stay tied long.  In the fourth, TJ Laino connected on a long two-run homer to straightaway right field to put the Dolphins ahead, 3-1.  Flashner then added his second RBI of the game in the fifth chasing home Michael Kehoe with a single.  One inning later, the Dolphins added two more runs on a 2-RBI single by Kehoe.  This put the Dolphins ahead 6-1, but CSI would miss out on an opportunity for more as they stranded the bases loaded.

In the bottom half of the inning, a ground-rule double set the stage for the second inside-the-park home run of the game.  Joe Pellegrino connected on a long fly ball to deep left field that turned around Jaden Waterman on the warning track and sent him crashing into the fence.  The ball ultimately rolled far enough away in the outfield corner to plate two runs and make it 6-3.  That score would hold until the bottom of the seventh when the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs.  Pellegrino would face Nick Pusinelli in a lengthy battle that culminated with an unassisted putout by Kehoe behind the plate.

Kielty earned his first career victory in the Dolphins win, and Pusinelli picked up his second career save.  Laino and Flashner both homered for the first time as Dolphins, and both, along with Kehoe, finished with 2 hits and 2 RBI.

GAME 2
After recording the first two outs, CSI starter Francesco Bonvini ran into trouble in the first inning of game two.  Three straight walks loaded the bases and the game's first run came home on a balk.  Another scored on a wild pitch before a fielding error prolonged the inning and plated a third run.  Finally, Matt Ryan delivered one of his three hits with a 2-RBI double to make it 5-0.  The Dolphins doubled twice in the first, but the first of those two doubles was erased by an unorthodox double play.  Panthers pitcher Tyler Bonsignore made a full-extension diving catch on a Flashner bunt and doubled Chris Polemeni off of second base.  A JJ Hunter double led to the first CSI run in the second, but this would be the only time the Dolphins would score.  The Panthers would end the game scoring the last five runs, and they went on to earn a split of the doubleheader with a 10-1 victory.

JJ Hunter was the lone Dolphin to record two hits in the game getting a start as the designated hitter.  Jandel Brito and Jake Giovannone both recorded their first hits as Dolphins in the loss.  Giovannone singled in his first at-bat of the game and Brito singled on his first swing during a ninth-inning pinch-hitting assignment.  Bonvini was charged with six runs, three earned, in the loss, and Ryan Fiore added another scoreless inning of relief out of the CSI bullpen.

The Dolphins will begin the long trip back home to Staten Island tomorrow afternoon.  Beginning on Saturday against Chestnut Hill College, they will enter a stretch of 13 games in eight days.
