Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FINISH AS FIFTH SEED IN PLAYOFFS WITH SENIOR DAY LOSS TO QUEENS, 77-75

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team fell to the five seed in the East Coast Conference playoffs earlier today as they lost to Queens College in their regular-season finale, 77-75.  After trailing by as many 25 in the first half, Queens slowly came from behind to overtake the Dolphins in the closing seconds on a step back two-pointer by Damiri Lindo.  With the loss, the Dolphins end the regular season 11-17 overall and 7-9 against the ECC.  Queens ends the year 12-16 overall and 8-8 in conference play.

The Dolphins got off to what was undoubtedly their best start of the season behind suffocating defense and lights-out shooting early in the first half.  CSI quickly scored the first seven points of the game and 15 of the first 19.  This included two of senior Chris Clancy's six threes and one more by Aaron Goldstein.  Clancy added his third three moments later and delivered his fourth of the half at the 11:57 mark.  Two more threes by fellow senior Shemar Latty and Joey Poulin helped push the Dolphins lead to a game-high 25 points, but the Knights proceeded to score 16 of the last 18 points before halftime.

Trailing by just eleven to start the second half, the Knights finally pulled to within two possessions with 11:40 remaining.  After making it a two-possession game a second time moments later, Clancy gave the Dolphins an eight-point cushion with another three.  Queens then pulled to within three twice, but the Dolphins answered with a score both times.  The Knights would surge yet again to briefly take the lead with 7:42 to go, but the Dolphins scored nine of the next eleven to go ahead by six.

The CSI lead would stand until the final 1:40 when a Shamar Chester three put Queens ahead by two.  The Dolphins then tied the score on a broken play leading to a dunk by senior Messiah Mallory, but the Knights took the lead yet again from the line.  Mallory would tie the score a second time on a tough shot in heavy traffic, but Queens would ultimately take the lead for good on their next possession.  With the score tied at 75, Lindo knocked down a contested step back jumper just inside the arc to put the Knights ahead by two.  CSI got up a late heave, but the deep three would not go, and Queens took the win, 77-75.

Clancy scored a season-high 22 and JJ Chestnut scored 15 points before fouling out.  Mallory also finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and 9 boards.  The Knights shot 43% from the field, 50% from downtown, and 93% from the line in the win.  The Dolphins also shot well at 44%, but CSI finished 38% from beyond the arc and just 67% from the line after a red-hot start.

With the loss, the Dolphins are forced to hit the road for the opening round of the ECC playoffs.  That will take them to Rochester on Wednesday night for a matchup with Roberts Wesleyan University at 7:00 PM.
