Game Recap: Baseball |

BASEBALL LIMITED TO ONE RUN IN DOUBLEHEADER LOSSES TO MOLLOY

Uniondale, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team was held to just one run across two games during today's doubleheader against Molloy University.  I game one, the Lions defeated the Dolphins 10-0, and in game two Molloy took the win, 6-1.  The Dolphins finish the day 6-18 and the Lions improve to 11-8.  CSI is now 1-2 in conference play and Molloy is 2-1.  The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow at the CSI Baseball Complex.

GAME 1
Lions starter James Sill did not allow more than a single base runner in any inning except the fourth as he tossed eight shutout innings.  Meanwhile, the Molloy bats heated up early with a run in the second and four more in the third.  This is all of the run support that Sill would need, but the Lions scored five more across three innings from the sixth through the eighth.  Molloy pitching also held the Dolphins to just five hits as CSI went on to suffer a 10-0 defeat.

Jaden Waterman had three of the five CSI hits in the game with the other two belonging to Jack Kehoe and JJ HunterAlex Martinez took the loss, but the CSI starter allowed just three earned runs in his six innings of work.

GAME 2
The Dolphins mounted an early threat in the first inning of game two as they loaded the bases with two outs in the inning.  However, a strikeout ended the Dolphins rally, and Molloy quickly answered by taking the lead for good in the home first inning.  A leadoff triple got things started for the Lions before a ground ball brought in the game's first run.  The Dolphins would strand two more on base in the second, and Molloy once again scored in their half of the inning.  A CSI throwing error turned a leadoff single into a runner in scoring position with nobody out.  Later in the frame with two outs, an unearned run came home on a Molloy single to make it 2-0.  For the second straight inning, the Dolphins left two on base in the third, and this time Molloy would break the seven-inning game open with three runs in the bottom half.  Two CSI hits bracketed a double-play in the fourth, and Molloy stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half of that inning.  The Lions would score their last run in the fifth and the Dolphins would eventually get on the board with a Chris Polemeni solo home run in the seventh.  The Polemeni homer made it 6-1, the score that would ultimately go down as the final.

Despite losing the game by five, the Dolphins were outhit by just four.  The difference in the game came largely in the form of runners left on base as the Dolphins stranded ten in the game.  Kehoe tallied multiple hits out of the leadoff spot for CSI, and he was one of seven Dolphins to record a hit in the game.  Both starter Aidan Kielty and reliever Gerard Santos pitched 3.0 innings for the Dolphins.  Kielty allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits, and Santos allowed one earned run on four hits.

The Dolphins and Lions conclude their four-game set tomorrow at 1:00 PM back on Staten Island at the CSI Baseball Complex.
