NINTH INNING RALLY PROPELS BASEBALL TO SERIES WIN OVER QUEENS, 8-6

Flushing, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team overcame a two-run deficit in the ninth inning of their series finale against Queens College today as the Dolphins came from behind to defeat the Knights, 8-6.  The Dolphins improve to 10-20 on the season and 4-4 in conference play with their third straight win against Queens.  The Knights end the weekend 8-17 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Knights struck first with an unearned run in the second inning to go ahead 1-0.  However, Queens would strand two on base, and the Dolphins would tie the game in the third.  With one out and two on base, Jack Kehoe singled in the first Dolphins run of the game to even the score, 1-1.  Queens responded quickly with three runs in the third, and the Knights would later strand the bases loaded in the fourth.  Following the missed opportunity for Queens in the top half of the frame, the Dolphins capitalized on two Knights errors to score twice in the bottom half.  One run scored on one of the two errors, and the second came in to score on a Jaden Waterman RBI single.  Now leading 4-3, Queens would score once on two hits in the fifth and once more on two hits in the seventh.  Trailing 6-3, the Dolphins got one run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Anthony Sutera.  However, the Dolphins left two on base, and the game went to the ninth with Queens leading, 6-4.

The final inning opened with consecutive hits by Chris Polemeni and Kehoe to put the tying runs on base with nobody out.  A wild pitch then scored Polemeni and advanced Kehoe into scoring position setting up a game-tying double by Jaden Waterman.  Two walks ultimately loaded the bases, and a third walk forced home the go-ahead run.  With just one out in the inning, Sutera brought home another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-6.  Queens did bring the tying run to the plate in the home ninth, but the Knights didn't threaten any further from there as Ryan Fiore closed out a CSI win.

Kehoe led the Dolphins with three hits, and Polemeni, Waterman, JJ Hunter, and Vincent Weigele each had two.  Sutera and Waterman each drove in two runs as well, and the Dolphins finished the game with 14 hits as a team.  Starter Francesco Bonvini went 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits, and Gerard Santos allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings of relief.  Fiore earned his first win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen as he allowed just one hit and struck out two.

The Dolphins will next be in action on Friday at the CSI Baseball Complex when they open another four-game East Coast Conference series against Mercy University.
