DOLPHINS CAN'T HOLD EARLY LEAD IN LOSS TO COUGARS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team could not hold on to an early lead in a loss to Caldwell University earlier tonight as the Cougars defeated the Dolphins, 13-6.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 2-9 on the season, and the Cougars improved to 4-1 with the victory.  The win for Caldwell is the third in three meetings with the Dolphins this season.

The Dolphins took the lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Chris Polemeni, and neither team would score again until the fourth inning.  Trailing 1-0, the Cougars tied the score on back-to-back one-out hits in the road fourth inning.  However, the Dolphins took the lead right back in the home fourth on an RBI double by JJ Hunter.  Now trailing 2-1, the Cougars rallied to take the lead in the fifth.  A leadoff double got things started, and a single put runners on the corners with one out.  A walk loaded the bases, and a strikeout left the bases loaded with two outs.  With the Dolphins needing one out to escape trouble, a 3-RBI triple and RBI single gave Caldwell a 5-2 lead.

The 5-2 score stood until the Cougars scored twice in the seventh, and Caldwell would add two more in the eighth.  The Dolphins also scored three times in the eighth, but the Cougars would score four more in the ninth.  The Dolphins scored once in the ninth as well, but they were never able to threaten the Cougars lead in a 13-6 defeat.

TJ Laino finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored.  Michael Flashner also had two hits, and both Polemeni and Hunter drove in two runs.

The Dolphins and Cougars are back at it tomorrow as the Dolphins visit Caldwell for a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
