REMARKABLE RUN ENDS FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WITH LOSS TO DAEMEN IN ECC CHAMPIONSHIP, 76-68

Amherst, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw their remarkable season come to an end today with a loss in their first-ever ECC Championship appearance as they fell to the #1 seed Daemen University Wildcats, 76-68.  The Dolphins trailed by double-figures in the first half and came surging back to take the lead entering the fourth quarter.  However, the Wildcats outscored the Dolphins 21-12 in the final period to take the win by eight.

As they did in their semifinal game against Mercy, the Dolphins fell behind by four early with just one made field goal in the first three minutes.  That stretch ended with a three from Jenalyse Alarcon to pull the Dolphins to within one, but Daemen would score the next six points to take a 12-5 lead.  The Wildcats would go ahead by as many as nine in the first and would briefly lead by double-figures in the second, but the Dolphins would come surging back late in the half.  A three by Madison Haggett cut the Daemen lead to six, and four straight points by Amber Abusbeih brought the Dolphins to within four.  Later trailing by six with seconds to go before halftime, Alexa Quirolo connected on another CSI three to send the game to the break, 40-37.

Daemen would go in front by as many as five in the third quarter, but Noemia Massingue made it a one-score game with another timely CSI three-pointer.  Trailing by four, Haggett buried a floater in the lane to cut the Daemen lead to one.  Moments later, Quirolo hit another three to give the Dolphins their first lead since the opening quarter.  The Dolphins quickly grew that lead to three, but the Wildcats scored at the buzzer to end the third trailing by one.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth early in the fourth, and the score was left tied at 60 with 7:15 to play.  It was here that the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run during which the Dolphins went nearly 2:30 without a made basket.  However, the run was brought to an end by consecutive CSI threes, one by Abusbeih and another by Dana Phelan.  With their lead trimmed down to one, Daemen responded with a three of their own to go ahead by four.  Another basket extended the lead back to six, but the Dolphins quickly cut the deficit to four from the line.  With 1:16 remaining, this would be the last time CSI would score, and Daemen would go on to win the 2025 ECC Championship, 76-68.

Abusbeih led the Dolphins with 16 points and was one of four Dolphins in double-figures.  Kyra Rose finished with 11, and both Alarcon and Quirolo had 10.  The Dolphins shot 43% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc in what was a strong shooting effort, but the Wildcats were an even more efficient 53% from the floor and 47% from downtown.

The Dolphins will graduate three starters as part of this year's senior class and see plenty of roster turnover entering the 2025-26 season. Jenalyse Alarcon, Noemia Massingue, Amber Abusbeih, Alexa Quirolo, and Oyinkansola Oke will all depart a program that has made the postseason three straight years.  The team also has more playoff wins that any other program and remains the only CSI program to appear in an ECC Championship.  The Dolphins are still holding on to hope for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, but they will have to wait until 10:30 PM tonight for final word on that opportunity.
