DOLPHINS COME JUST SHORT OF ERASING EIGHT-RUN DEFICIT IN LOSS TO PANTHERS, 12-9

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team nearly erased an eight-run deficit in their loss to Adelphi University earlier tonight, but the Dolphins fell just short of completing the comeback in a 12-9 defeat.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 12-23 on the year and improves the Panthers to 17-17.  The Adelphi win also earns them a split of the season series with the Dolphins at two game apiece.

The Panthers jumped ahead early in the first inning as Joe Pelligrino connected on a three-run homer to give Adelphi the lead, 3-0.  The first two Dolphins reached in the bottom half of the inning, but CSI could not push a run across as they stranded a pair.  Adelphi then went right back to work in the road second as they scored three more runs on four hits to take a 6-0 lead.  Finally, the Panthers took their largest lead of the game in the third as they added two more runs without the benefit of a single base hit.  It was in the bottom of that inning that the Dolphins got on the board for the first time behind an AJ Vigliotti 2-RBI double.  JJ Hunter then singled home one more to make it 8-3 entering the fourth.  Adelphi would immediately tack on one run in the next inning thanks in large part to an infield single that got lost in the wind.

With CSI now trailing 9-3, neither team would score again until the sixth.  Nicholas Rodriguez delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the Adelphi lead to five, and a wild pitch brought home the fifth CSI run of the game moments later.  Behind by four entering the home seventh, the Dolphins mounted a rally that put them in position to get even or take the lead.  Three straight walks loaded the bases, and a 2-RBI double by Jaden Waterman made it 9-7.  Another walk reloaded the bases with nobody out, and a strikeout followed by a sacrifice would make it 9-8.  Clinging to a one-run advantage, the Panthers escaped the inning with the lead, and Adelphi would go on to score three of the last four runs in the game to win, 12-9.

Chris Polemeni led the Dolphins with three hits in the game, and both Waterman and Rodriguez finished with two hits.  Vigliotti drove in three runs as well, and the Dolphins collected eleven hits as a team.  The CSI bullpen allowed just three runs over the final six innings of the game on seven hits, but the Dolphins were not able to overcome the early deficit.

The Dolphins will be on the road to open a conference series with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday as they face the Spartans in a single nine-inning game at 3:30 PM.  The series then shifts back to CSI on Saturday for a doubleheader at the CSI Baseball Complex.
