DOLPHINS FALL TO MAVERICKS IN BACK-AND-FORTH ECC TOURNAMENT DEBUT, 5-4

Niagara Falls, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team dropped a back-and-forth affair in their ECC postseason debut earlier today as they fell to Mercy University, 5-4.  The Mavericks took the early lead behind an unearned first-inning run.  The Dolphins then took their first lead of the game with two unearned runs of their own in the fourth, but the Mavericks took the lead right back with a pair in the fifth.  The Dolphins would tie the score twice in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Mavericks would take the lead for good after two walks and a critical Dolphins error led to an unearned run in the seventh.  The win for Mercy sends them to the winner's game against Molloy University tomorrow.  The Dolphins will face Queens College with the loser being eliminated from the tournament.  The winner of the game between CSI and Queens will face the loser of the game between Mercy and Molloy for a spot in the ECC Championship Final.

After a leadoff single, a Dolphins error turned a potential double-play grounder into a pair Mercy runners in scoring position with nobody out.  CSI starter Ryan Kehoe then retired consecutive Mavericks for the first two outs of the game, but a two-out RBI single gave Mercy their first lead, 1-0.  The 1-0 score would stand until the fourth when a single and a hit batter put the first two Dolphins on base.  An error loaded the bases, and a fielder's choice ground ball tied the game at one.  Moments later, Michael Flashner singled home a run to put CSI in front, 2-0.

The CSI lead was short-lived as Mercy went back in front with a pair in the fifth.  However, a TJ Laino RBI double tied the score in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-3.  Mercy then took the lead back with a run in the sixth, but once again the Dolphins would waste no time getting even.  With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Chris Polemeni delivered a game-tying RBI single to make it 4-4.  After recording the first out of the seventh in relief, Aidan Kielty walked consecutive Mavericks to put two on with one away.  A critical error then loaded the bases paving the way for a go-ahead sacrifice fly.  Trailing 5-4, the best chance for the Dolphins came with two on and two outs in the eighth, but they failed to score.  The Dolphins would then go down in order in the ninth as they dropped their Division II postseason debut, 5-4.

Polemeni, AJ Vigliotti, Laino, and Flashner all had two hits in the game for the Dolphins as they ultimately outhit the Mavericks, 9-8.  The difference in the game was the five walks issued by CSI pitching and three critical Dolphin errors.  Kehoe allowed three earned runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work in a no decision.  Kielty took the loss despite not allowing an earned run as he walked two in 1.0 inning of relief.  Jack Kehoe also added two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen.

The Dolphins open day two of the 2025 ECC Baseball Championship tomorrow morning against Queens College at 10:00 AM.  The loser will see their season end and the winner will play for a spot in the ECC Championship tomorrow evening.
