STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Staten Island Advance announced Thursday afternoon the five honorees for this year's Staten Island Oldtimers Awards, with College of Staten Island baseball head coach Mike Mauro among the recipients. The longtime Dolphins baseball coach has been selected as the recipient of the Varvaro Legacy Award.

Now in its third year, the Varvaro Legacy Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates exceptional community service, unwavering dedication, and a commitment to going above and beyond in support of the Staten Island baseball community.

"Receiving the Anthony Varvaro Legacy Award is one of the biggest honors I've ever received. I was very close with Anthony, and I know how much he loved Staten Island and how much he did for our community," Mauro stated. "To be mentioned in the same category as him is an honor beyond words. I'm truly humbled and will do my best to honor his legacy through my continued work in supporting the Staten Island community."

The following paragraphs are from the Staten Island Advance release on the award winners.

Mauro was a star baseball player for both McKee and John Jay College. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers after college and played rookie and Class-A ball in the minor leagues before enjoying immense success in the highly competitive Twyford-Muche League.

He assisted former Tottenville varsity baseball coach Tom Tierney Jr. at both New Utrecht and Tottenville. Then, and after assisting ex-CSI head baseball coach Bill Cali for a year, he took over the Dolphins' program in 2009. He guided CSI into Division II play and has enjoyed immense success at the Willowbrook school throughout his career.

But the former city police officer has also volunteered for numerous fundraisers, charitable events and worthy causes through the years and it's one of the reasons why he was selected for the prestigious award.

The 7th annual awards breakfast on Oct. 18 at LiGreci's Staaten in West Brighton at 10:00 AM.
