STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island women's basketball team returned to the Tank on Wednesday evening for an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup against Queens College (NY). Behind a career-high 30 points from Dana Phelan, the Dolphins earned a convincing 72–54 victory over the Knights. Phelan knocked down six three-pointers on the night to lead CSI to the win.
CSI set the tone early, opening the game with an 8–0 run fueled by Arielle Barnes and Krya Rose. The Dolphins maintained control throughout the opening quarter, and Phelan helped create separation late in the period, drilling a three to give CSI a nine-point lead, 13–4, with three minutes remaining.
Queens responded in the second quarter, outscoring CSI 17–12 to cut into the deficit. After the Knights opened the frame with a three-pointer to pull within five, 19–14, Shonyae Edmonds answered with back-to-back buckets in the paint to keep the Dolphins in front. Queens continued to chip away, trimming the lead to three heading into halftime, 31–28.
The Dolphins took over in the third quarter behind a dominant stretch from Phelan. Half of her six three-pointers came in the period, sparking a 23-point quarter while CSI held Queens to 13. After Rose scored the first points of the half, Phelan erupted for eight straight points, pushing the Dolphins ahead by double digits for the first time at 41–35. She later connected on her fourth three of the night to extend the lead to 51–37.
CSI entered the fourth quarter up 54–41 and quickly pulled away. Phelan opened the frame with her final three-pointer to make it 61–41, and Edmonds later gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the night at 22 points, 65–43. CSI cruised the rest of the way to secure the 72–54 win, improving to 8–13 overall and 4–5 in ECC play.
Phelan led all scorers with 30 points and tied a career high with six made threes. Rose posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, adding four assists and three steals. Barnes finished with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Rockville Centre, NY to face Molloy University at 12:00 p.m.
