WILMINGTON, DE – The College of Staten Island women's soccer team returned to non-conference action Wednesday afternoon against Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, DE. Three different Dolphins found the back of the net, but CSI ultimately fell to the Lightning, 7-3.
The Lightning wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The hosts added two more goals later in the first half to take a 3-0 advantage into the break.
Early in the second half, the Dolphins applied pressure in the Lightning's defensive zone, and Sara O'Donnell found the back of the net with a strike from 45 yards out to get CSI on the board and cut the deficit to two. However, Goldey-Beacom responded with three unanswered goals. Caitlyn Thompson then delivered another long-range strike for the Dolphins, halting the Lightning's scoring run.
As regulation time wound down, Thompson was awarded a free kick and sent the ball toward the net. The goalkeeper lost possession, allowing Addison Lucy to pursue the rebound. After another save by the Lightning keeper, Ximena Rodriguez capitalized on the opportunity to score the first goal of her collegiate career and close out the scoring for CSI. The Dolphins ultimately fell, 7-3.
Thompson led the Dolphins with six shots, including four on goal, while O'Donnell added two shots. Carolynn Oakes made her first appearance in goal this season, recording nine saves.
The College of Staten Island women's soccer team (2-7) returns to action this Saturday for an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup against Queens College in Flushing, NY, at 5:00 PM.
