STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's basketball team celebrated Alumni Day on Saturday afternoon during its East Coast Conference matchup against the University of the District of Columbia.
Mitchell Wiggan delivered a career-high performance, leading the Dolphins with 26 points.
The first half was tightly contested, featuring multiple lead changes before the Dolphins took control late to secure a 41-33 advantage at halftime. UDC struck first, but CSI answered on its next possession. Contributions from JJ Chestnut, Joey Poulin, Wiggan, and Asa Kone helped extend the lead to 15-8.
The Firebirds battled back to tie the score at 20, sparking a back-and-forth stretch that included eight ties and 14 lead changes throughout the game. After falling behind 28-23, Aaron Goldstein knocked down his first three-pointer to cut the deficit to two. UDC responded with a free throw, but Poulin answered from beyond the arc to even the score again. Andrew Benedict then converted from the charity stripe to give CSI a 31-29 edge.
The Dolphins closed the half strong, taking an eight-point lead into the break.
Kone opened the second half with a free throw, but a 9-0 UDC run gave the Firebirds a 43-42 lead. CSI quickly regained momentum, as Poulin put the Dolphins back in front, 49-47. With just over 11 minutes remaining, CSI extended its lead to nine.
Wiggan later gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the day at 66-56 with a tip-in. However, UDC rallied in the closing minutes, trimming the deficit to one before using consecutive baskets to reclaim the lead. The game was tied three more times before the Firebirds pulled ahead for good, securing an 81-77 victory.
Wiggan shot 50 percent (8-16) from the field and 83 percent (10-12) from the free-throw line while adding seven rebounds. Chestnut finished with 17 points and six assists, while Goldstein and Poulin contributed 11 points each.
The Dolphins (17-8, 8-5 ECC) return to action on Sunday, Feb. 22, for D2 Day as they host Roberts Wesleyan University at 3:00 PM.
