STATEN ISLAND, NY – The No. 3 seed College of Staten Island men's basketball team hosted No. 6 seed Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday night at the Tank in the East Coast Conference First Round. Despite leading by nine at halftime, the Dolphins were outscored in the second half as the Redhawks rallied for a 79–76 victory, ending CSI's postseason run.
The Dolphins came out firing, opening the game on a 7–0 run fueled by Eric Tynes, Asa Kone, and Aaron Goldstein. Just four minutes into regulation, CSI had built a commanding 15–1 lead following back-to-back three-pointers from Goldstein and Tynes.
Roberts Wesleyan responded with a brief scoring burst, but JJ Chestnut answered to keep the Dolphins comfortably in front. Kone later extended the lead to 17, and CSI was first to reach 20 points while holding the Redhawks to just seven early in the contest.
Throughout much of the first half, the Dolphins maintained a double-digit advantage. However, the Redhawks chipped away, cutting the deficit to 29–21 with seven minutes remaining. CSI ultimately carried a 39–30 lead into halftime.
Goldstein opened the second half with two free throws to push the lead back to 11, and Tynes drilled another three-pointer to make it 46–32. The Dolphins stretched their advantage to as many as 18 points with 16 minutes to play and appeared firmly in control.
But momentum shifted midway through the half. A 10–0 Redhawks run erased the deficit and tied the game at 71, the first tie of the night. From that point on, CSI was unable to reclaim the lead as Roberts Wesleyan completed the comeback for the 79–76 upset.
