DOLPHINS FACE OFF WITH SAINTS IN AN ECC DOUBLEHEADER

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team opened Saturday afternoon with an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader against D'Youville University at Sal Maglie Stadium.

The Dolphins dropped both contests, falling 10-9 in game one after a late Saints comeback before suffering a 10-1 defeat in game two. With the losses, CSI moves to 9-19 overall and 4-12 in conference play.

Game One: D'Youville 10, CSI 9
The opener proved to be a high-scoring battle, with the Dolphins posting a season-high nine runs over nine innings. CSI struck first in the top of the third when Jack Kehoe delivered an RBI single to score Jamel Vera.

The Dolphins added to their lead in the fifth. Brandon Bartick reached after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a Saints balk. In the same inning, Michael Flashner crossed the plate on another Kehoe RBI to give CSI a 3-0 advantage.

Jaden Waterman sparked the offense again in the sixth with a leadoff double. The Dolphins plated two more runs in the frame behind an RBI from Ryan Ortega and a Vera sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 5-0. D'Youville responded with its first runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.

CSI appeared to regain control when Jandel Brito and Ortega each drove in runs to push the lead to 7-2. However, the Saints answered with four runs in the eighth to pull within one and shift the momentum.

In the ninth, Waterman tripled and later scored, and Ortega added another RBI single to extend the lead to 9-6. Still, D'Youville mounted a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning to walk off with a 10-9 victory.

Waterman led the Dolphins offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, and two runs scored. Ortega finished 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI, while Kehoe added two RBI. Ryan Palm started on the mound and worked 7.0 innings with one strikeout.

Game Two: D'Youville 10, CSI 1
D'Youville carried its momentum into game two, erupting for seven runs in the first inning to take early control. The Saints added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-0.

The Dolphins broke through in the sixth. Brandon Bartick reached as a leadoff hitter and later scored on a Saints error, accounting for CSI's only run of the game and trimming the deficit to 8-1.

The Saints responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and held CSI scoreless in the seventh to secure the sweep.

Bartick and Ortega recorded the Dolphins' only hits, with Ortega's coming as a double. Nicholas Chiaia pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four.

The College of Staten Island baseball team will return home on Wednesday, Apr. 15, to host their annual Hometown Heroes Fundraiser game against Felician University at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park at 7:30 PM.
