ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – The College of Staten Island softball team faced Molloy University at the RVC Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon for an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader. The Dolphins split the matchup, taking game one to secure the regular season series victory over the Lions with a 3-1 mark.
CSI now stands at 10-16 overall and 5-7 in conference play after a 10-5 win in game one and a 2-1 loss in nine innings in game two.
Game One: CSI 10, Molloy 5
Jianna Lopez sparked the Dolphins early with a double in her first at-bat, quickly moving into scoring position. Madilyn Paul followed with a double of her own to bring Lopez home for a 1-0 lead.
Molloy responded in the bottom of the first with two home runs to take a 2-1 advantage, but CSI answered in the second and kept the Lions scoreless over the next four innings. Abbie Morris and Bridget Motley opened the inning with singles, and with the bases loaded after Kaylee Cary reached, the Dolphins tied the game on a walk. Lopez delivered again with an RBI single to put CSI ahead, 3-2, before Milene Mendoza added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Dolphins added four more runs across the third and fourth innings, with RBIs from Motley, Paul, and Warner, along with a run scored on a Molloy error, to build an 8-2 lead. The Lions pushed back with three runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the deficit to 8-5, but CSI sealed the win with two runs in the seventh. Morris drove in one, and Mendoza scored on a throw to second to make it 10-5.
Paul led the team with two RBIs, while Warner, Motley, Lopez, Morris, and Presley Borne each recorded one. Warner, Paul, Cary, and Morris had three hits apiece, and Lopez went 2-3 with two runs scored. Kennedie Ruth earned the win with a complete game, striking out three.
Game Two: Molloy 2, CSI 1 (9 Innings)
Game two mirrored the teams' earlier meeting this season, stretching into extra innings. Molloy struck first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, while CSI threatened multiple times but left the bases loaded in both the first and fifth innings.
The Dolphins broke through in the seventh when Rose Joseph led off with a double. Emma O'Neill entered as a pinch runner and advanced to third before scoring the tying run on a passed ball with two outs, forcing extra innings.
Despite the late momentum, Molloy secured the split with a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.
Joseph led CSI at the plate, going 2-4, while four other Dolphins recorded hits. Marena Grenier pitched 8.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out one.
The Dolphins return home on Saturday, Apr. 18, for an ECC doubleheader against Queens College (N.Y.), with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM at the CSI Softball Complex.
