FLUSHING, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team split an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader against Queens College on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins took game one, 7-4, before falling in a high-scoring game two, 21-11, following a late Knights rally.
With the split, CSI moves to 11-21 overall and 6-14 in conference play.
Game One: CSI 7, Queens 4
The first three innings remained scoreless before the Dolphins broke through in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Michael Flashner led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Jack Kehoe sacrifice bunt. Jaden Waterman followed with a two-RBI single to extend the advantage.
Queens got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Dolphins were held in check until the eighth inning, when they loaded the bases and added two more runs. Waterman recorded another RBI to score Jamel Vera, and Ryan Ortega followed with an RBI of his own to push the lead to 5-1. The Knights responded in the bottom half with three runs to pull within one, 5-4.
CSI added two insurance runs in the ninth behind contributions from Jason Romance and Brandon Bartick to secure the 7-4 victory.
Waterman led the Dolphins with three RBI, while JJ Hunter and Bartick each recorded two hits. Ryan Palm delivered a strong outing on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings with four strikeouts. Kehoe earned his fourth save of the season, striking out two in the final frame.
Game Two: Queens 21, CSI 11
Game two turned into an offensive battle, with both teams combining for 32 runs. The Knights jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs over the first two innings. CSI got on the board in the third on an RBI from Romance.
The Dolphins responded with a huge eight-run inning to take an 8-7 lead. Jamel Vera started the rally with a double, followed by a two-run triple from Flashner. Romance, Ortega, Hunter, and Vincent Weigele each contributed RBI as CSI surged ahead.
Queens regained the lead in the fourth, but the Dolphins answered with two runs in the fifth to go back in front, 10-9.
The Knights then broke the game open with a 12-run inning, seizing control and building a 21-10 lead. CSI added one more run late, but Queens secured the 21-11 win to split the doubleheader.
Romance led the Dolphins with three RBI, while Vera, Flashner, and Ortega each drove in two runs. Nicholas Chiaia started on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.
The Dolphins will return to Hennekens Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the final game of the regular season series, scheduled for 12:00 PM. Prior to first pitch, the teams will resume their suspended game from March, which is tied 7-7 heading into the top of the ninth inning.
