DOBBS FERRY, NY – The College of Staten Island baseball team celebrated Senior Day in style on Friday afternoon, sweeping Mercy University in an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader, 10–9 and 6–0.
Prior to game one, the Dolphins honored seven seniors: Jaden Waterman, Christopher Reilly, Vincent Weigele, Nicholas Chiaia, Alex Martinez, Aidan Kielty, and Ryan Fiore.
Game One: CSI 10, Mercy 9
The opener proved to be a back-and-forth battle, with the Dolphins prevailing in a thrilling 10–9 victory.
CSI struck first when Jaden Waterman drove in Jack Kehoe for a 1–0 lead. Mercy answered with three runs in the second to take a 3–1 advantage, but the Dolphins quickly responded. In the third, Kehoe and Waterman reached base, and Michael Flashner brought Kehoe home to cut the deficit to 3–2.
After holding the Mavericks scoreless over the next two innings and tying the game, CSI found itself trailing again as Mercy regained the lead and extended it to 7–4. The Dolphins responded in the sixth, loading the bases before Jason Romance drew an RBI walk to make it 7–5.
Waterman then delivered the biggest swing of the day, crushing a first-pitch grand slam to give CSI a 9–7 lead. Flashner later added an insurance run, capitalizing on a Mercy error, and the Dolphins held on down the stretch to secure the 10–9 win.
Waterman led the offense, going 3-5 with five RBI, finishing a triple shy of the cycle with a home run, double, and single. Weigele added an inside-the-park home run, while Flashner drove in two runs and Brandon Bartick collected three hits.
On the mound, Michael Furst started and pitched 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Aidan Kielty earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 innings and striking out one.
Game Two: CSI 6, Mercy 0
The Dolphins carried their momentum into game two, completing the sweep with a 6–0 shutout.
JJ Hunter got CSI on the board with his first home run of the season in the second inning. Later in the frame, Bartick doubled to center field to drive in another run, extending the lead to 2–0.
The Dolphins continued to apply pressure, scoring in multiple innings as Weigele, Romance, and Bartick each recorded RBI to build a 6–0 advantage heading into the final frame.
On the mound, CSI combined for a dominant performance. Ryan Fiore got the start before Nicholas Chiaia took over, pitching 4.0 strong innings with five strikeouts. Jack Kehoe closed out the game, retiring the side in order to secure the sweep.
Weigele and Bartick each recorded two hits and two RBI, while Flashner drew two walks and Hunter provided the lone home run of the game.
The Dolphins improve to 13–25 overall and 8–17 in ECC play. CSI will return to Dobbs Ferry on Sunday for the series finale against Mercy, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
