The current Athletic Director and head coach for basketball, cross-country and soccer at the Success Academy Charter Schools (Ditmas Park Middle School), Akanmu joined the CSI Dolphins staff in August, 2017. He holds a bachelor's degree from Baruch College in Political Science and a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration also from Baruch College.
From September 2016 to June 2017 he was a Global History Teacher at his alma matter Xaverian High School as well as the Head Freshman Basketball Coach. Before arriving at Xaverian he spent 2015 and 2016 as the graduate assistant for the Baruch College's Men's Basketball team where he worked closely with Head Coach John Alesi and the rest of the coaching staff that also included current CSI Head Coach T.J. Tibbs. There, his primary responsibilities included film exchange, player development for all guards, and breaking down of game film.
Prior to becoming the Graduate Assistant for the Baruch College, Akanmu spent two years as a member of the team and served as a captain for the 2014-2015 CUNYAC championship team. From 2011-2013 he attended Division II Queens College where he was an All-Rookie team performer/ Most Outstanding Freshman for the 2011-2012 season. Before attending Queens College he attended Xaverian High School from 2006-2010. While at Xaverian he played three years of varsity basketball for Coach Jack Alesi.
In addition to college basketball experience Akanmu spent summers teaching the game of basketball at various basketball camps that include Xaverian basketball Camp, New York Knicks Summer Basketball Camp, Nike Basketball Camp and Walt Clyde Frazier Basketball Camp. He also has experience working in higher education as an intern in the Admissions office at Wagner College as well as a part-time employee in the Office of Partnerships and Community Engagement at CUNY Guttman Community College.
