CSI BASEBALL SCORES WITH HOST OF CUNYAC HONORS

The City University of New York announced their baseball all-stars for the 2009 season. The College of Staten Island tallies a total of eight players including CUNY Rookie of the Year winner Henry Roman while first year Head Coach Mike Mauro earned CUNY Coach of the Year.

The talented first team of all stars includes freshman Steve Hession, Pat Gale and Tom DiPietro while topping it off with CSI's seniors Mike Madalone and Jon Reyes. The second-team consists of Dolphins right fielder Tom DeWaters and pitcher James Mardikos.

Winning player of the week on two occasions, Hession finished the season with a batting average of .346 with a total of 45 hits and was third on the team with 22 RBI. Playing in all 39 games, Gale led the team in a fair amount of categories including hits (52), RBI (42), doubles (16) and total bases (77).With a batting average of .264, DiPietro totaled six homeruns in the 2009 season ranking him ninth in the CSI record book and tied for first in CUNY. On the offense side, Madalone registered 30 hits and 18 RBI while defensively the catcher had a .979 fielding average with 22 assists. Senior pitcher Reyes had the second best ERA in CUNY at 3.59 totaling five wins and pitching four complete games.

Second team all-star DeWaters tallied 26 hits at 95 at bats sporting a batting average of .274. Sophomore pitcher Mardikos registered four wins for the Dolphins with 42 strikeouts.

While determination comes from the heart of the players there is no question that Mauro has had an influence on his team and their success. After Bill Cali stepped down from the head coach position in the fall, Mauro took over. He led to team to a 7-3 CUNYAC finish with a 19-20 overall finish.

Player of the Year was awarded to Baruch's Jorge Rosado while Pitcher of the Year was given to Michael Colletta of John Jay. Along with CSI's stars the first-team consisted of John Jay's Xavier Perez, Edwin Hernandez and John Massoni, Lehman's Gilbert Garcia and Andrew Rosario, Barich's David Chestnut and Mitchell's Adam Deltgen. The second-team included CCNY's Raymie Fernandez and Derek Faucher, Lehman's Amadoernesto Guzman, Baruch's Daniel Brudie, Kellin Bliss, Thomas Daly, Benjamin Riofrio and Joseph Valentin, Mitchell's Clayton Boegler and Jeff Perillo and John Jay's James Podlucky.
