The College of Staten Island women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to New Jersey City University in a non-conference contest, 5-2, earlier this afternoon in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Dolphins loss snaps the teams season-opening three game win streak, while the Gothic Knights raced out to their sixth straight win to open the season.
NJCU broke open a knotted first half at the 16-minute mark of the first half, taking a 4-1 lead into intermission. Both teams added a goal in the second frame to comprise the final score in a game where NJCU outshot CSI, 37-6.
Gothic Knight forward Julia Caseres opened things up at the 4:50 mark, giving the home squad a 1-0 edge, converting on an Amanda Spethman cross from the right endline past CSI keeper
Valerie Incontrera. CSI only registered two first half shots, and they made their first one count at 8:14, as sophomore and two-time CUNYAC Player of the Week
Demi-Jean Martorano banked her 9th goal of the season on a 25-yard free kick into the upper left corner of goal past keeper Brittany Hoffman.
From there, however, it was all Gothic Knights, as the home squad had a 22-2 first half shot advantage. Despite 11 first-half Incontrera saves, NJCU added three goals in less than 18 minutes. Jennifer Albuja registered first off of a Brianna Taylor cross and then at 25:02, Caseres scored on a rebound to make it 3-1. Albuja scored again a little over 9 minutes later to increase the lead.
NJCU enjoyed a 15-4 shot advantage in the second stanza, and Albuja capped her 11th career hat trick at 56:50, giving the Knights the commanding 5-1 edge. CSI responded less than three minutes later when
Samantha Wysokowski scored her third goal of the season on a giveaway which she blasted in from 30 yards away.
Hoffman earned the win for NJCU, making a pair of saves. Despite the loss, Incontrera finished with 16 saves, a career high for CSI, who will next be in action on Saturday, when they travel to Randall's Island to take on John Jay College at 12 Noon.
