Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer team scored an early tally, then clamped down defensively and rolled to a 5-0 win over John Jay College as part of CUNYAC play earlier this afternoon at the CSI Soccer Complex. The Dolphins lifted their overall record to 7-3, staying perfect in CUNY play with a 4-0 record. The Bloodhounds fell to 4-8, 2-2, respectively. The game was a part of the 2nd annual Homecoming at CSI and marked CSI's 4th annual Kick for a Cure event, promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. The team was escorted onto the field during introductions by the Richmondtown Rush U-9 girl's soccer team remaining on the sidelines contributing to the game's success for a great cause.
It was no question that CSI dominated the game, outshooting John Jay, 40-7. The first goal of the game came at the 10-minute mark with Gabriella Galeano intercepting a pass from John Jay and dishing it off to
Samantha Wysokowski. Instantly,
Demi-Jean Martorano and Wysokowski connected for a passing combination that Martorano finished in the back of the net. It took some time for the Dolphins to find a rhythm of passing, moving and switching the ball across the field. After numerous attempts at the net, the harmony clicked when Melissa Gerlardi kicked a long ball from 30 yards out directly to Martorano's head and into the net.
There were several injuries and unsettling moments between players of both teams, including an injury to CSI's
Alyssa Colasurdo, who did not return. CSI nursed a 2-0 lead at halftime, almost making it 3-0 when a Wysokowski header hit the crossbar late in the frame.
Ten minutes into the second half, John Jay had their best chance of the game, when Bergelie Louis came racing in from the left side, and put a shot on goal that also hit the crossbar, keeping the game at 2-0. Shortly after, in the 64
th minute, the Bloodhounds were whistled for playing a ball with the hand in the goal box and CSI was awarded a penalty shot. Mortorano took the penalty kick and placed it into the upper right hand side of the net for the natural hat trick. Five minutes later, Gerlardi made a pass to Wysokowski, who dribbled into the 18 for a placement shot to the left of JJC goalkeeper Katelyn Davis for the fourth goal. In the late stages, which most of CSI's reserves in the game,
Megan Collins scored her first career goal in the 75
th minute on a breakaway, aggressively running through the ball which ricocheted off of Davis back to Collins.
A statement by Head Coach John Guargliardo summed up the importance and hard work paid off from this victory. He stated, “By winning this game it gave us a first round (CUNYAC Tournament) home game, which will lead us to the ultimate prize, the NCAA. All of the women played really well.”
CSI's next game will be a non-conference test against St. Joseph's College of Long Island, played at the CSI Soccer Complex on Wednesday, October 10, at 4:00pm.
