DOLPHIN WOMEN TRIUMPH IN SEASON OPENER

Martorano nets goal and Donegan shines in 1-0 win over Benedictine

CSI's Victoria Donegan posted 10 saves in the win against Benedictine
Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer team got their 2012 campaign off on the right foot Friday morning, defeating the Eagles of Benedictine University, 1-0, in the first game of the Inaugural Fall Classic held at the CSI Soccer Complex.  The win started the Dolphins at 1-0 overall, while BU fell to 0-1.

Junior Demi-Jean Martorano, who paced the Dolphins for 18 goals in 19 games a year ago, seemed to pick up where she left off last season tallying the lone goal, while sophomore Victoria Donegan shined between the pipes to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Martorano capitalized in the game's 19th minute, powering in a line drive from just beyond the box after an indirect free kick was started by freshman Deanna Kvetkoff.  The indirect kick was awarded when BU keeper Candance Rodgers handled a ball with her hands that was played off of her own defender.

Despite being outshot 13 to 9 by the Eagles, the Dolphins were able to handle the rush, as the Eagles went a significant stretch controlling the play.  The one goal was more than enough for Donegan who stopped 10 shots on goal, including two stellar saves on point blank shots from Eagle attackers Maricruz Zarko and Meagan Johnson.

CSI was flagged with a pair of yellow cards, as both Natalie Tombasco (56th minute) and Nicole Molinell (64th), each received a caution.  CSI was paced by Samantha Wysokowski and Melissa Gelardi, who each posted a trio of shots.

The Dolphins will next face off against Wisconsin-Platteville in tomorrow's second game of the Classic at 2pm.
