GELARDI BREAKS NATIONAL RECORD AS CSI POUNDS MEC IN SOCCER

Melissa Gelardi now has a new NCAA record for assists in a game with 9.
Box Score In what was the final CUNYAC contest for the College of Staten Island women's soccer team, the Dolphins rolled over Medgar Evers College, 12-0, at Old Boys High School Soccer Field in Brooklyn on Sunday.  The Dolphins improved to 13-0-2 overall and a perfect 6-0 in CUNYAC play, and will await the CUNYAC Tournament as the field's No. 1 seed.  MEC fell to 0-13, 0-4, respectively.

CSI scored eight first half goals, with senior Demi-Jean Martorano pouring in a first half hat trick, while Samantha Wysokowski and Senda Karagozler each posted a pair of goals.  The story, however, belonged to junior Melissa Gelardi, as the midfield catalyst distributed an NCAA Division III record nine assists on the game, breaking the former record of seven, held by three former players.

Gelardi recorded assists on five straight first half goals, then another to end the half, putting her one shy of a record she had no idea she was about to come close to or break.  In the second half, Gelardi fed three different goal scorers in the second half, the first on an Amanda Percaccio goal, then a tally by Ashley Albanesse, and a final hat-trick tally from Wysokowski.

"I really didn't have any idea of what the record was," Gelardi said.  "My number one goal was to try and get the ball in good positions for my teammates to make plays and put them in position to score and I was glad I got to do that."

CSI out-shot MEC, 29-1 (18-1 on goal).  CSI keeper Jennifer Cosenza made the lone save for the shutout, her debut and CSI's third straight clean sheet, while Marlene Thompson made 6 saves in defeat.  Martorano led all scorers with eight shots, while Albanese followed with six.  CSI was whistled for a whopping 23 offsides calls.

Gelardi's 9 assists are the most since Amy Bornfleth's seven helpers of Maryville (MO) vs. Westminster (MO) on September 19, 1999.  Gelardi leads the team with 16 assists this season putting her at 53 for her career, also a CSI record.

"The record is something I never expected and I guess it is a bit impressive.  There's no way I'm going to be able to do that again," she joked.  "It is a nice record, but seriously, it wouldn't mean much if it didn't help us win or if it didn't help my teammates do what they do best.  I'm happy for the entire team after the win."

Up next for the Dolphins will be a non-conference test vs. CUNYAC-rival City College of New York on Wednesday at 4pm at the CSI Soccer Complex.
