WSOC 13 - Senior Day

Women's Soccer

ON SENIOR DAY, BIG SECOND HALF LEADS CSI OVER BEAVERS, 3-1

Box Score On a day when the Dolphins would honor its four seniors, the College of Staten Island women's soccer team kept their undefeated season in play, using three goals in the second half to score a 3-1 win over visiting City College of New York at the CSI Soccer Complex.  The game, which did not count toward the CUNYAC standings, lifted the Dolphins to 14-0-2, while the Beavers fell to 9-7.

Prior to the game, CSI honored its four seniors; Demi-Jean Martorano, Amanda Percaccio, Victoria Donegan, and Jeannie Notholt.

Having beaten CCNY earlier in the year, 2-1, both teams knew the game could end up being a defensive stalemate, and that is what the first half held.  Both teams did have a handful of quality chances, including a header on goal by both Demi-Jean Martorano and Samantha Wysokowski for CSI and a pair of open-look shots by CCNY's Jessica Salas at the top of the goal mouth.  Still, the first half ended in a 0-0 tie, despite a strong 13-4 edge in shots for the Dolphins.

In the second half, however, CSI began to dominate play, controlling the ball on the CCNY end of the field a majority of the time, relegating the Beavers into a series of low-percentage, counter-attacking attempts.  CSI nearly registered when a Wysokowski header grazed off of the crossbar, but the Dolphins' relentless attack finally paid off with 22:46 left in regulation.  Wysokowski was able to put a ball into the box via a cross that CCNY keeper Nicole Carroll went to meet, but a diving Martorano got to the ball first, grazing it past Carroll and passed a diving Yanique Newman, who tried to sweep it off of the goal line but missed, giving CSI the pivotal, 1-0, edge.

From there, the game opened up, and while the Beavers were forced to take more chances, CSI tried to pick up another goal.  They were successful with 11:-4 remaining.  This time, junior Melissa Gelardi made an excellent spin move to get past a defender, knocking in a cross that went over a leaping Carroll and right onto the head of Wysokowski, who headed the ball in to give CSI a decisive 2-0 edge.

The Dolphins look to put the game away on what could have been the prettiest goal with 7:56 left.  This time a soft pass by Gelardi led Wysokowski on a long run and the junior dropped the ball off of Nicole Molinell, who ran into ball and put one into the top shelf from roughly 20 yards away to give CSI the 3-0 lead.

With CCNY pressing, the team registered their goal with just 3:46 to play.  Jessica Salas did the honors, receiving a feed from Jasmine Campbell and putting up a soft shot that managed to squeeze by CSI keeper Victoria Donegan, who ended up making one save for the victory.

CSI finished with a 32-6 edge in shots (18-2 on goal).  CCNY keeper Carroll shined, making a whopping 15 saves and breaking up numerous other plays.  Martorano led all players with 9 shots.  The goal scored by her was her 80th of her career, easily the most in CSI and CUNYAC Women's Soccer history.

CSI will be back in action on Friday, hosting SUNY-Old Westbury at 4pm at the CSI Soccer Complex as part of continued non-conference play.
