Box Score
The College of Staten Island women's soccer unit kept their undefeated season rolling, and in the process clinched the CUNYAC Regular Season Championship, turning back John Jay College, 3-0, in CUNYAC competition held earlier today at Randall's Island. The Dolphins improved to 10-0-1 and 5-0 in the conference, while the Bloodhounds fell to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
In a recurring theme on the season, the Dolphins thoroughly dominated both possession and the scoring distribution, out-shooting the Bloodhounds, 31-3, overall, but it took two late goals inside of five minutes remaining in the contest to really assure the Dolphins getting out with a victory.
Playing without previously red-carded Deanna Kvetkoff and Meghan Burke, the Dolphins still put a host of shots on net in the first stanza, 13 in total, but it wasn't until a Kathryn Dowling CSI goal in the 22nd minute that gave CSI some breathing room. Dowling was fed on a cross from Jean Notholt on the play. From there, though, JJC keeper Andrea Antoni made seven first half saves to keep CSI at bay at the half, 1-0.
With Antoni in the midst of making 10 more saves in the second frame, JJC never truly threatened offensively, but it wasn't until the late stages until CSI was able to truly put the game on ice. With just five minutes left, assist leader Melissa Gelardi fed leading goal scorer Samantha Wysokowski in the box, and the junior hammered the ball home to make it a 2-0 game. Later, with two minutes to go Gelardi struck again, this time feeding MateaMarie DeNoble to give CSI a more comfortable 3-0 edge that held up to the final whistle.
CSI posted 20 pf their 31 shots on goal, while JJC only got three total shots at the net, all turned away by keeper Victoria Donegan for the shutout.
The Dolphins have one final conference match remaining, with winless Medgar Evers College. Regardless of the result however, CSI can finish no lower than in a tie with Brooklyn College for first place in the standings, and by virtue of their 3-1 win over the Bulldogs last week, CSI would own the tiebreaker in the event of that scenario. Four of the CUNYAC's seven teams will make the postseason tourney in early-November. The Regular Season Championship insures the Dolphisn the top-seed in the tourney. The win for the Dolphins was also the 19th straight over a CUNYAC opponent during the regukar season.
CSI returns to the pitch on Tuesday, October 8, when they travel to Riverdale, NY, to take on Mount Saint Vincent for an evening matchup at 8:30pm.
