CSI WOMEN GRAB OPENING DAY VICTORY OVER JOHN JAY, 4-0

Demi-Jean Martorano punched in CSI's first two goals en route to the 4-0 final
Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer team got off to a great start in 2013, blanking visiting John Jay College in their opener, 4-0, as part of the 2nd Annual CSI Fall Classic at the CSI Soccer Complex this afternoon.  The Dolphins improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Bloodhounds fell to 0-1.

On the stat sheet, CSI dominated the contest, but it wasn't until the 23rd minute when CSI finally was able to register.  All-time leading scorer Demi-Jean Martorano did the service, punching home a rebound via header after a Deanna Kvetkoff shot boomed off the crossbar.  Less than nine minutes later of hard work to get another marker, CSI tallied again via Martorano.  This time the senior came up with the ball after a scramble near the top of the box, finally collecting the ball and putting a beautiful shot in the high opposite corner passed JJC keeper Katelyn Davis to give CSI a 2-0 lead.

The Dolphins had outshot JJC to that point, 20-1, but the Bloodhounds never flinched and kept frustrating CSI offensively.  After several failed attempts to go to goal, CSI got on the board again at 75:40.  Newcomer Danielle Smith led a feverish run down the left side of the field on a give-and-go with Samantha Wysokowski.  Wysokowski, who led CSI in goals in 2012, then put the ball behind Davis to stake CSI to the 3-0 advantage.

With most all of their reserves in the game, CSI added a very late goal in the final minute.  Danielle Alexandrini picked up her second assist of the game on a crossing feed to freshman Senda Karagozler, who chipped her goal over the outstretched arms of Davis for the final tally.

CSI out-shot JJC, 38-2 (14-2 on goal).  CSI keeper Victoria Donegan was never truly tested, picking up the shutout win.  Held scoreless, CSI's Melissa Gelardi led all players with eight shots.  Despite allowing four goals, Davis made 9 stops for the Bloodhounds.  The CSI defensive tandem of Amanda Percaccio, Natalie Tombasco, Alyssa Colasurdo and Nicole Molinell shined, as did Megan Burke in the midfield, in her CSI debut.

CSI will kick things off tomorrow when they host New Jersey City University at 10am in their final game of the Classic.  NJCU defeated City College of New York, 1-0, on Friday.  CCNY will face John Jay at 12 Noon.
