Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#19 WILMINGTON STORMS BY CSI TO END WIN STREAK, 6-0

Wilmington, DE | The College of Staten Island men's soccer team saw their five game win streak come to an end, and they ran into a tough Wilmington University side that came into the game ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division II ranks.  After a 2-0 lead at half, the Wildcats ran away with a 6-0 final, lowering the Dolphins to 6-4-1 overall while extending the Wildcats to 9-1-1.

The Dolphins never could get comfortable in this one.  Even after a strong, frenzied, start, the Wildcats defensive midfield pressed the Dolphins into turnovers, going the other way for waves of counterattack that ultimately led to several good looks and great chances in the first half.

CSI got off two of the game's first three shots, but both team struggled to find the net as multiple shots were wide or high on frame while a number of crossing attempts were headed out and handled by the respective keepers.  It wasn't until the game's 35th minute where the first shot on goal was taken, as WU's Abdul Mansaray blasted one on frame off of a rebound that got through the outstretched arms of CSI keeper Christian Carucci, giving the home side a 1-0 advantage.  With momentum fully seized, WU kept the pressure on, and less than five minutes later, Mansaray connected again, this time on a blast that was saved by Carucci.

With the Wildcats still pressing for the insurance marker, they got it with just 4:01 to go in the half as Ben Jordan was in the right place at the right time, putting in a ball off of an errant shot.  The lead held into halftime, 2-0.

As fast as Wilmington ended the first frame, they started out even faster in the second.  The home side got off six quick shots in front of goal, one that went off the post and a follow up that rocked off the crossbar to no avail.  Then, 10 minutes in, CSI almost got the break they needed, but a Carlos Montesinos shot from long range git off of the crossbar as well, keeping it a two-score game.

From there, the game belonged to the Wildcats.  They dominated possession and less than three minutes after Montesinos hit the bar, they made it 3-0 when Ben Jordan added another on a long-range blast off of an entry pass from Davion Wedderburn.  A little more than three minutes after that, WU got another from Mansaray on a tough angle shot off of a Hakim Williams entry from near the goal line.

Play tempered from there but the Dolphins would only get one shot on goal from then on in, off of the foot of Lirim Gjonbalaj, turned aside by WU keeper Gabriel Prgomet.  Meanwhile, Dimitrios Anastasiou joined the goal-scoring party in the 78th minute to make it 5-0, while Taiki Kinugawa capped the scoring with a tally in the 87th.

WU led the final shot count, 21-5 (9-2 on goal) and held a more modest, 4-2, edge in corner kicks.  Both teams were whistled for 10 fouls apiece.  Carucci made three saves in defeat, while Prgomet registered a two-save shutout win.

CSI will be back in action to take on future ECC-opponent Mercy College on the road on Saturday for a 3:00 pm tilt in Dobbs ferry, NY.
