Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving teams both improved to 2-0 today with victories over Mount St. Mary College, the men winning by a score of 155-86 and the women earning a 143-101 win. The men are now 3-0 against the Knights while the women earn their first victory over Mount St. Mary in program history.
WOMEN'S MEET
Mount St. Mary got the meet started with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay to put them up 15-2 and from there the two teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. CSI swam unopposed in the 1000-yard freestyle to even up the score at 15, but the highlight of that event was the record-setting performance of
Deirdre McCafferty. Her time of 10.59.89 was both a pool and school record as she continued her impressive start to her freshman campaign following another strong performance last weekend vs FDU-Florham.
The Knights were able to get back in front behind a first-place finish from Daley O'Keefe in the 200-yard freestyle and extended their lead further with a one-two finish by Shayla McCarroll and Emily Gursky in the 100-yard backstroke. Now trailing 42-25 the Dolphins closed some of the gap with a win by
Lisnette Solano in the 100 yard breaststroke and another win by McCafferty in the 200-yard butterfly. In the final event prior to 1-meter diving,
Gabriella Bartley took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle to pull CSI to within four, 62-58.
Jen Basini scored a 152.70 as she competed uncontested in one-meter diving to give the Dolphins a 67-62 lead, a lead they would hold for the remainder of the meet. Bartley and
Victoria Musarella both scored for the Dolphins swimming unopposed in the 100-yard freestyle to increase CSI's advantage on the scoreboard. However, the Knights' comeback attempt began by cutting the Dolphins 18-point, 80-62 lead, to three when McCarroll and O'Keefe took the top two spots in the 200-yard backstroke.
Now ahead 82-79, the Dolphins got another first-place finish from Solano in the 200-yard breaststroke followed by a McCafferty win in the 500-yard freestyle.
Sabella Vaserman then took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly before Solano made it four straight CSI individual first-place finishes with her win in the 200-yard individual medley. The meet closed with a Dolphins win in the 200-yard freestyle relay giving CSI a 143-101 win, their first over Mount St. Mary on the women's side in program history.
MEN'S MEET
Things got off to a tremendous start for the men and they never looked back after building a substantial lead through the first several events. To open their meet, the men picked up a win in the 200-yard medley relay followed by an uncontested win in the 100-yard freestyle.
Michael Blacharski and
Ilir Mujaj finished one-two in the 200-yard freestyle before the Knights picked up their first win of the afternoon by Joe Tagliareni in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Dolphins regained command quickly behind a win by
Michael Stora in the 100-yard breaststroke, but the Knights responded with a Robert Kohlus win in the 200-yard butterfly. In the final event before diving,
Ilir Mujaj and
John-Paul Piscopo finished one and two in the 50-yard freestyle to give the Dolphins a 71-39 lead.
Following
Xavier Nicholson competing uncontested in both one and three meter diving with scores of 171.45 and 156.9 the Dolphins increased their advantage on the scoreboard to 89-39. However, the Knights took first place in the two events that followed, the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. A Stora win in the 200-yard breaststroke and a Blacharski win in an uncontested 500 yard freestyle padded the Dolphins lead yet again allowing them to coast to the finish.
In the Knights' last individual top-finish of the meet, Kohlus won the 100-yard butterfly. The meet then closed with back-to-back Dolphins top finishes, a Stora win in the 200-yard individual medley and a team win in the 200-yard freestyle relay en route to a 155-86 CSI victory.
CSI will make it three-straight home meets to begin 2019-2020 when the host familiar CUNYAC foe York College on Friday at 5 PM.
