CSI DROPS FIRST-EVER MEETING WITH NEW YORK TECH, 66-48

Old Westbury, NY  |  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team dropped their inaugural matchup against New York Tech earlier tonight by a final score of 66-48 in a game that CSI never led.  The Dolphins see their losing streak to open the season extended to five with the defeat while the Bears earn their fifth win of the season to improve to 5-3.

The Dolphins got a strong start from Kayla Schmitter coming off of her 21-point performance in CSI's previous game against Post University.  Schmitter scored five of the first seven CSI points and her three-pointer with just over seven minutes to play in the first evened the score at 7-7.  This would be the last time the Bears would not hold the lead in the game as the next basket for Tech, a Kestia Athias layup, put them in front for good.

The make by Athias spurred a 6-0 run for the Bears that extended beyond the five-minute mark in the quarter before Diedre Foster broke the run with a jumper.  Neither team would score again until there was 2:27 left in the opening frame when Megan McEwan got on the board for the Dolphins with another CSI three.  This brought the Dolphins back to within one, but the Bears would outscore CSI 5-2 the rest of the way to finish the quarter up by four, 18-14.

The Bears scored the first three points in the second before Foster got CSI within four on another Dolphins' make from long-range, their third and final three-pointer of the game.  Shalie Frierson answered right back with a three of her own to extend the lead back to seven before Taylor Tripptree added the Bears second straight make from deep less than two minutes later to put her team ahead by eight.

Neither team would register another made field goal for over two minutes until Kristina Arvelo made it 27-23 with her second score of the game.  However, the Bears responded quickly with another three, the beginning of a 15-4 run to conclude the half.  This sent the teams into the halftime locker room with the Bears ahead 38-27 and left the Dolphins with a double-digit deficit to contend with in half number two.

The Bears would maintain control of the game following the intermission and would quickly increase their lead to 18 just over three minutes into the third quarter.  It was once against a 15-4 run by the Bears that got the second half started to put them ahead 53-31, a 22-point lead that the Dolphins could not overcome.  The two sides exchanged baskets for the remainder of the third, and the Dolphins would only get as close as 18 in the fourth on a free throw in the final seconds.  The result was a 66-48 defeat for CSI in a game that was ultimately decided by the outside shooting of the Bears.

The 40% shooting of the Bears from downtown was the difference-maker on the scoreboard, but they also held the edge on the stat sheet in their performance from the field, 36.9% vs 32.7%, and on the glass, 48-39.  The only Dolphin in double-figures was Foster with 14 while Frierson and Meg Knollmeyer scored 14 and 17 respectively for New York Tech.  Knollmeyer also contributed a team-leading 16 rebounds, eight offensive and eight defensive, to go along with 8 more boards and 7 points from Athias.

Next up for the Dolphins is Saturday's meeting with local rival Division I Wagner College.  The Dolphins will travel just a few miles for the road matchup with the Seahawks with tip-off scheduled for 1 PM.
