Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team dropped their matchup with local Division-I rival Wagner College this afternoon by a final score of 81-57. The Dolphins trailed by only five at halftime, but once again they struggled in the third quarter which allowed the Seahawks to run away with the 24-point victory. The Dolphins are now 0-6 after the defeat while Wagner improves to 4-3.
The Dolphins held a 2-0 lead early after
Kayla Schmitter opened the game's scoring with a pair of free-throws, but CSI would quickly find themselves playing from behind. Wagner would score the next five before
Kristina Arvelo connected on CSI's first field goal two and a half minutes in. A Schmitter three-pointer cut a 9-4 Seahawks lead to two before Wagner responded with a make at the other end to go up 11-7.
With the Dolphins trailing by four at the 5:52 mark, neither team got on the board again until Alex Cowan put Wagner ahead by seven with a three. The made three by Schmitter with 6:18 to play in the quarter would ultimately go on to be the last made field goal for the Dolphins in the opening frame, and they did not score again until two
Denise Priolo free-throws made it 14-9 with 32 seconds remaining on the clock.
Ahead by five entering the second, Wagner scored the quarter's first five points before the Dolphins finally ended a stretch of nearly eight minutes without a made field goal. It was a jumper by
Jada Rogers that ended the cold-spell and made it an 18-11 game. However, the Seahawks drilled another three on their next possession to take a double-digit lead for the first time, 21-11.
It was here that CSI's offense came alive behind six straight points from
Diana Todaro and back-to-back three-pointers by Diedre Foster and
Megan McEwan to put the Dolphins ahead for the first time since the opening minutes. The 12-0 CSI run was followed by a 6-0 Seahawks spurt which was ended by another make from Foster to pull the Dolphins within two, 27-25. This basket would be the last scored by CSI in the half and they trailed 31-25 at the break.
The Dolphins offense started off the third quarter strong as Rogers, Arvelo, and Schmitter all got on the board within the first three minutes. However, Jordan Hobson knocked down a pair from beyond the arc for Wagner, the second of which put her team up by seven. Trailing 39-32, the Dolphins went ice-cold from the floor and only connected on one shot, a Priolo three-pointer, between the 7:34 mark and the :07 mark in the third quarter. During that nearly seven and a half minute span, the Seahawks seized control took a commanding 56-35 lead before the Dolphins finally registered a made field goal to wrap up the frame.
CSI was unable to recover from the brutal seven-minute stretch that saw them fall behind by twenty-one and never got closer than fifteen again in the 81-57 Seahawks victory. Schmitter led CSI in scoring with 12 and in rebounding with 9. Rogers added 9 more points for CSI and a trio of Dolphins, McEwan, Todaro, and Priolo, all had 8. Four Seahawks, Hobson, Cowan, Khaleah Edwards, and Katrice Jackson scored in double-figures. Jackson and Edwards also shared the team lead in rebounds with 7.
The Dolphins return home for the first time since 11/23 on Tuesday when they open a doubleheader at The Tank against CCNY. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
