SECOND-HALF ONSLAUGHT VS CCNY EARNS CSI THEIR FIRST WIN, 96-51

Story Links

Staten Island, NY  |  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team picked up their first win of the season tonight over the Beavers of CCNY by a final score of 95-61.  The Dolphins move to 1-6 on the year after a dominant second half allowed them to run away with the game in the third quarter while the Beavers remained winless and fell to 0-7 with the defeat.

The Dolphins struggled out of the gate despite scoring the game's first two points as the Beavers scored five unanswered, three on long-ball by the CUNYAC's leading scorer Reilly Boehm, to take the early 5-3 lead.  The Dolphins pulled ahead 6-5 on a pair of Jada Rogers free throws giving her all of the first six CSI points, but the Beavers proceeded to score the next 9 to go in front 14-6.

It wasn't until Diana Todaro finished inside to snap the CCNY run with 3:13 to play in the opening quarter that a Dolphin other than Rogers got on the board.  Megan McEwan followed with a jumper shortly after to cut the beavers lead to four before a pair of Todaro free-throws pulled CSI to within a pair.  The Dolphins then leveled the score on Deidre Foster's first make of the game which would bring the teams to the end of the opening frame knotted up at 14-14.

It was CSI that struck first in the second quarter with Kristina Arvelo making it five different Dolphins that had gotten on the scoreboard with her first basket of the game.  Kayla Schmitter then made it six with a layup to give CSI a four-point, 18-14, advantage.  The Beavers got even soon after with four straight but CSI would get back on front on another make by Rogers.  Leading 20-18, Denise Priolo added to the list of Dolphins that had gotten in the points column with a three to put the Dolphins ahead by five, their largest lead of the half.

The Dolphins would go on to extend that lead to eight on a Tori Moylan three-pointer before stretching their advantage to double-digits on a Jada Rogers layup to give her eleven.  The Beavers got back to within single-digits to close out the half with the Dolphins taking a 33-24 lead into the locker room.  Rogers led the way for CSI with 11, but she got some help scoring the ball from every other Dolphin that saw the floor prior to the halftime break.  Boehm had nine to lead all scorers for the Beavers who only scored ten in the second quarter.

The Dolphins came out on fire in half number two and quickly ran away with the game in the third quarter.  Ahead by nine just over a minute into the second half, the Dolphins scored twelve straight to extend their lead to twenty-one.  Boehm ended the run with a pair of free throws, but CSI went right back on a tear piling on another twelve straight.  This left CCNY with an insurmountable deficit to contend with entering the fourth, a quarter in which the red-hot Dolphins offense dropped another 34 points.

With their 34 in the fourth, CSI had tallied 63 in the second half on their way to the 96-51 victory, their first of the season.  Five Dolphins, Rogers, Arvelo, Foster, Moylan and Todaro scored in double-figures while Boehm had 18 and Tianna Fumasoli had 21.  No other Beaver scored more than 4 points as the CCNY offense labored through the final three quarters of the game.  CSI's 56% second-half-shooting raised their overall percentage from the field to 42% for the game, something they hope to see more of moving forward.

The Dolphins will face another CUNYAC opponent in their next game on Friday when they head on the road to take on Medgar Evers.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 PM.
