WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING HANDED FIRST DEFEAT VS HUNTER, 127-85

11/9/2019 3:39:00 PM

Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Swimming & Diving team saw their season-opening win streak come to an end at three meets today against the Hawks of Hunter College.  The Hawks are now 1-0 to get their season underway and the Dolphins are 3-1 through their first four meets.

The Dolphins were dealt an early blow against Hunter to open today's meet when the Hawks took the top two spot in the 200-yard medley relay.  However, CSI answered right back when Deirdre McCaffery and Kathleen Bridgman took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle.

Now trailing 22-17, McCafferty once again took first place in the 200-yard freestyle immediately following her performance in the 1000-yard event not long before that.  Combined with a scoring performance from Melissa Poggioli, the Dolphins took the 28-26 lead into the 50-yard freestyle which was won by Sarah Betts of the Hawks.

The win by Betts in the 50-yard freestyle was the first of back-to-back first-place finishes, the second being by Sarah Decker in the 200-yard IM, for Hunter leading into one-meter diving.  For the Dolphins Jen Basini dove unopposed by the Hawks earning a score of 151.65 and nine points for her team.

The score now 52-49, the Hawks seized control of the meet from this point forward winning the next three events that followed, the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle, and 100-yard backstroke.  Not only, did Hunter win these individual events, but they took two of the top three spots in all of them to put some distance between themselves and the Dolphins.

Putting an end to the Hawks winning-streak was McCafferty with a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, but the Hawks then proceeded to take the top spot in the two events that followed, the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle relay.  This brought the meet to a close and a meet that was initially filled with lead changes and close finishes culminated with a 127-85 Hawks victory.

The women will be competing alongside the men when they return to action next Friday against Baruch at The Tank for a 6 PM meet.
