Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

BIG SECOND HALF POWERS #2 ADELPHI OVER CSI MEN, 6-1

After a scoreless tie going into halftime, No. 2 Adelphi University stormed through the College of Staten Island in the game's second half in men's soccer action, lifting the Panthers to an eventual, 6-1, win over the Dolphins in non-conference play.  AU lifted to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while the Dolphins fell to 1-3.

Despite the eventual final score, it was anyone's game through the first 45 minutes of action in what was the first match ever between the two sides.  Adelphi seemed to control the better of play, but neither side could find the frame, with several shots on both sides sailing wide of being blocked down defensively.  It wasn't until the 43rd minute until the first shot on goal registered, as AU's Paolo Marciano put one on target, saved by CSI keeper Jake Foeldes. CSI had five shots taken in the first half, but none on goal, and none forcing a save from AU keeper Matthew Apicella.

The game's second half provided an altogether different look tonight.  Again, AU controlled play, only this team, the team found the frame, and all six AU shots on goal, found the twine for goals.  After a quick shot was blocked, Marciano placed a header that hit off of the post for AU in the 50th minute, and Aiden Keenan was there to punch in the errant rebound to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge just 4:30 into the games second half.

That changed the complexion of the game, as CSI had to throw numbers to the attack, leaving them vulnerable to the counterattack.  The added pressure allowed Carlos Montesinos a chance in the 54th minute, forcing Apicella to make a stop, his first of the game.  A few minutes later, Marciano rainbowed a pass into the box that Taylor Kaczynski was able to head into goal to give AU a 2-0 lead at the 57:26 mark, putting the Panthers in full control.

A patient AU side then scored just 2:13 apart later in the frame.  Giancarlo Vacca made it 3-0 at 68:29 on an unassisted goal, and AU seemingly put the game out of reach when Marciano finally got the goal he was threatening to tally all game, receiving a cross from Kaczynski that he slammed home at 70:41.

With heavy substitutions in the game, AU continued to pour it on, adding a goal by Tim Cleere in the 82nd minute and then an Alex Sipos goal at 87:21 to make it, 6-0, late.

Looking for a small consolation, and to break the shutout, the Dolphins did deliver late in the game.  Senior Ryan Layman extended a free kick into the penalty area that freshman Lirim Gjonbalaj was able to turn on and put into the net to make it a 6-1 game with just 11 seconds to play.

AU led the final shot count, 17-9 (7-2 on goal), and held a modest, 7-5, lead in corner kicks.  Apicella made a single save in the win, while Foeldes made a save in defeat.  The six goals allowed by the Dolphins were the most since the Dolphins fell to Lehman College, 7-3, on October 8, 2014.

The Dolphins will get the next two days off before returning to the pitch on Monday, September 16.  They will travel to face St. Thomas Aquinas College, a future ECC-opponent, for a test at 3 pm.
