Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team were defeated by the Chargers of the University of New Haven, 81-50, as part of CSI's annual Tournament of Heroes. The loss drops CSI's record to a 0-1 start, while the Chargers start their season with a 1-0 record following the win. This was CSI's first meeting every versus the Chargers. Before the game started, former CSI student-athletes Terrance Aiken, Scott Davidson, and Tom Hannafin, three former men's basketballers who perished during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. In game two of the tournament, visiting teams, The College of Saint Rose defeated D'Youville College, 101-65.
KEY MOMENTS
The Dolphins would score the first basket of the game to go up, 2-0, however, the Chargers would go on a 12-2 run taking a 14-4, lead and never lost the lead in the game again, though, CSI played tough and headed into the half down by eight, 34-26. CSI would make their best run at the start of the second half, a three by
Chris Velasquez cut the Charger lead down to four, 37-33 followed by a
Bryce Waterman layup that would cut it down to two points, 37-35. CSI would keep the score close for the next five minutes of play, though, they were not able to take a lead. The Chargers would use a 13-0 run to pull away from CSI, 58-40 that seemed to deflate the Dolphins the rest of the game with under eight to play. From that point on, CSI would only score 10 more points in the game before a final score of 81-50.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins committed 16 turnovers in the game allowing 24 New Haven points off those turnovers. CSI shot 33% from the field, compared to the Chargers who shot, 47% from the field and committed only nine turnovers. The Chargers bench outscored CSI, 21-8. The rebounding battle was also won by New Haven, 44-33, including 12 offensive rebounds. Charger Davontrey Thomas poured in 31 points on an efficient 10-15 from the floor and grabbed 10 boards for a double-double. New Haven also dominated the paint, 46-18.
DOLPHINS OF THE GAME
Bryce Waterman and
Chris Velasquez had the most impact in the game despite the loss, thus, will be today's Dolphins of the game. Waterman shot 6-19 from the field (4-15 from three), good for 16 points and eight rebounds. Velasquez added 13 points on 4-8 shoots (2-4 from three) and tallied five rebounds and four assists in the game playing 29 minutes.
Messiah Mallory grabbed nine boards in his 37 minutes of play and was the only other Dolphin in double figures with 11 points on 4-12 shooting.
