Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team failed to make it consecutive conference wins this afternoon as they dropped today's game against the Molloy College Lions by a final score of 65-52. The Dolphins fall to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play following the defeat. The Lions' second victory in their last three games improves them to 2-7 overall, 2-0 in conference play.
ALUMNI GAME
Ahead of today's game, Men's Basketball hosted the tenth annual Matty White Alumni Game. Former members of the program gathered on team black and team blue for a four-quarter, forty-minute contest held each year in remembrance of Matty and Delores White. After team black jumped out to a sixteen-point first-quarter lead, team blue fought back to within three ahead of what would be the final possession of the game. Team blue would attempt a three for the tie, but they couldn't get the shot off ahead of the buzzer as team black held on for the victory, 81-78.
KEY MOMENTS - MEN'S BASKETBALL VS MOLLOY
Both offenses came out sluggish to open the game as neither team reached the 20-point mark until nearly twelve minutes into the first half. It was also at this point that the Dolphins took their only lead of the game, 21-20, on a stepback jumper by Luis Armas. CSI would fall behind by three shortly after, but the Dolphins got back even on a three-pointer from Bryce Waterman. However, CSI would trail the rest of the way. The Dolphins went into the halftime locker room down six before the Lions opened the second half with a 9-0 run. The Lions' lead would get as large as eighteen points, and the Dolphins would not get any closer than nine as Molloy cruised to a thirteen-point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins shot 35% in the first half but were still able to remain within striking distance entering the intermission. However, their sub-30% shooting in the second half was too much to overcome. The two teams combined to attempt 32 free throws in the second half as the two sides were whistled for 24 fouls. This stopped the clock repeatedly down the stretch of the game, but the Dolphins' poor shooting and 20 turnovers prevented them from staging a late-game comeback.
