Wilmington, DE – The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball team scored the most points ever this season in the first half of play and shot the ball nearly 70% from the field, however, it wasn't enough as CSI fell to the Lighting of Goldey-Beacom College, 95-80. The loss drops CSI's record to 4-11 overall while the Lighting won their fourth game in a row to improve to 9-7 overall.
KEY MOMENTS
In the first few minutes of the game, both teams were exchanging three-point baskets as CSI took an early 9-3 lead off back-to-back made threes by
Luis Armas. Mid-way through the first half the game was tied, 19-19 as both teams went back-and-forth tying the game three more times. It wasn't until Bryce Watermen and
Chris Velasquez hit back-to-back three-pointers that put them up by seven, 38-31 with under five to play in the half. The Lighting responded a few minutes later cutting the lead down to two, 48-46, with a Zack Oree made three-ball. The Dolphins would end the first half the same way they started, with back-to-back threes by Armas, who hit a perfect 5-5 from three entering halftime. As the second half started, CSI took a quick 10-point lead, however, CSI would begin to cool down from the field as Goldey-Beacom would use their size to chip away at CSI's lead. It was a 15-2 run that helped the Lighting take a 61-58 lead early in the second half. A few minutes later, Waterman would hit his sixth three, tying the game at 61-61 with under 14 minutes to play in the game. At this point both teams hot shooting cooled down, though, more so for CSI as the Lighting would turn up the defense and string together a few Dolphin turnovers as they went up by as much as 12 points, 75-63, with under eight minutes left to play. CSI would cut the Lighting lead down to nine, however, another big run put them up by 16, 87-71, which was their largest of the game with only three minutes left in to play. CSI was not able to get much closer as The Lighting defeated the Dolphins by a final of, 95-80. 29 points
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Dolphins were red hot from three to start the game, especially in the first half, hitting 14-19 three-point field goals. However, the Lighting were also shooting the ball well, hitting 9-16 threes of their own. Overall, both teams ended the first half shooting over 50%; CSI in particular shot 67% missing only 10 shots in the entire first half. The second half was a different story as CSI cooled down considerably, shooting just under 30% while being outscored in the second half, 49-26. The Lighting shot nearly 50% from the field the entire game while CSI ended shooting at 50% due to their hot start in the first half when they shot nearly 70% from the field. Despite the poor shooting in the second half, rebounding was a big reason for the Lighting taking the lead as they out-rebounded CSI, 27-12 in the second half alone, including 13-3 on the offensive boards. The Dolphins made more four threes than the Lighting, however, most came in the first half of play. Meanwhile, Goldey-Beacom had total team effort as all five Lighting starters scored in double-digits.
