Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES GRIP ON DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD IN LOSS TO GOLDEY BEACOM, 104-96

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team got off to a strong start for the second consecutive game this afternoon, but they could not hold on to a 20-point lead in their loss to Goldey Beacom College.  After leading by 20 in the first half, the Dolphins trailed by as many as 13 in the second half.  CSI would then take the lead with just under four minutes to play, but could not hold on down the stretch in an eight-point defeat.  The Dolphins fall to 0-2 with the loss and the Lightning even up their record at 1-1 with the victory.

The two teams exchanged baskets early and were tied at seven through the first three and a half minutes, but the Dolphins quickly seized control from there. CSI would score 19 of the next 21 points to go ahead 26-9. Their first-half lead grew as large as 20 behind another incredible shooting performance highlighted by Luis Armas and Bryce Waterman. The duo combined to shoot 12-18 from downtown in the game all while the interior was dominated by Messiah Mallory who finished the game just one rebound and two assists shy of a triple-double. The CSI lead peaked with just under 4:30 to play in the half, but the Lightning surged back and closed the half down only seven thanks to a last-second buzzer-beating three.

Following the intermission, Tyshon Judge briefly took over the game offensively for Goldey Beacom, at one point connecting on three consecutive attempts from beyond the arc. He finished the game with 28 points, and combined with a 23-point effort from David Aikens and 18 more points from Ahyshion Centeno, the trio helped give the Lightning the lead just under six minutes into the second half. Following a go-ahead three by Judge to make it 61-59, Goldey Beacom scored 15 of the next 19 to take a 13-point lead, their largest of the game. After the 33-point swing, the Dolphins battled all the way back to go ahead by two on an Armas three with 3:41 remaining. However, the Lightning then went on an 11-2 run to close the door on the CSI comeback bid and secure the victory.

In addition to 25 points for Armas and 18 for Waterman, James Chestnut had 20 in just his second game with the Dolphins. The two teams combined for 200 points behind 69% three-point shooting from CSI and 44% three-point shooting for the Lightning. CSI shot well above 50% from the floor while the Lightning shot a solid 49% from the field. However, Goldey Beacom attempted 40 free throws while the Dolphins took just 9. This disparity was too much to overcome for the second straight game and the Dolphins came up just short.
