Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

TIME RUNS OUT ON DOLPHINS COMEBACK BID IN LOSS TO HOLY FAMILY, 75-66

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team opened their 2022-2023 season earlier tonight as they hosted the opening game of their annual Conference Challenge.  The event, sponsored by TLC Physical Therapy and Jimmy Max Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, features the Dolphins and three additional teams visiting The Tank.  Meeting for the second time in this event, the Tigers of Holy Family University defeated the Dolphins for the second consecutive season by a final score of 75-66.  The 0-1 Dolphins entered the fourth quarter down 20 and trailed by only four with over a minute to play.  However, the 1-0 Tigers closed out the victory from the free-throw line in the closing seconds to win by nine.

The Dolphins got off to a poor start in the game and trailed by double digits at the end of the first quarter.  Things didn't improve much in the second either as the Tigers lead grew to fourteen points by halftime behind a barrage of second-chance points.  Despite the poor start to the game and difficulties rebounding, Jenalyse Alarcon provided an offensive spark for the Dolphins during the first 20 minutes.  The third quarter once again saw the Dolphins struggle to close out defensive stops with rebounds, and the Tigers lead once again grew, this time to 20 points.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Dolphins came out energized and immediately began an aggressive comeback bid.  The Dolphins scored the first six points of the quarter in just over a minute, and more players began to get involved at the offensive end for CSI.  The Dolphins would score 25 points in the final quarter, over half of them coming from the free throw line.  Behind a reinvigorated defense and 13-16 shooting from the line, the Dolphins pulled to within four on a Jenalyse Alarcon layup with 1:13 remaining.  Unfortunately for Alarcon and the Dolphins, they wouldn't get any closer as time simply ran out on the comeback attempt.

Alarcon lead all scorers by a wide margin with 21 points in the game.  She also grabbed 11 rebounds earning her a double-double for the first time this season.  On the other side, two Tigers nearly registered a double-double as Carolyn Prevost finished with 12 and 9 while Ava Morrow finished with 13 and 7.  That duo led Holy Family in points in what was a very balanced scoring effort for the visitors.  Neither team finished the game with good shooting numbers as both shot below 40% from the floor.  The Dolphins shot only 2-14 from three point range while the Tigers finished 6-20.

The Dolphins will be right back at it tomorrow as they conclude the 2022 Conference Challenge against the University of Bridgeport.  That game will be the Conference Challenge finale and will tip off at 3 PM.
