Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL TO BRIDGEPORT FOLLOWING LATE SURGE BY PURPLE KNIGHTS, 75-74

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team dropped their second game of the season this afternoon as they fell to the University of Bridgeport by a single point, 75-74. The Dolphins led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but the Purple Knights came storming back behind a fourth-quarter surge. They led by as many as 7 in the fourth, but the Dolphins battled back to within two in the closing seconds. However, the Purple Knights, now 2-0 on the season, closed out the victory from the free throw line and sent the Dolphins to an 0-2 start.

The Purple Knights got off to a slow start from the field shooting well under 30% from the field for much of the first quarter. This allowed the Dolphins to build an early lead that peaked at six points, 11-5, four minutes into the opening quarter. Neither team would score for two minutes after that, and the opening periods would end with the Dolphins leading by two. The CSI lead would never grow past six in the second, and despite perfect 5-5 three-point shooting, including 3-3 from Dana Phelan, the Dolphins would lead by just two at halftime.

After the two teams combined for 44 points in the second, neither team scored much in the third. The Dolphins would get six third-quarter points from Jenalyse Alarcon, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the second straight game, and would end the quarter leading by seven. Two minutes into the fourth the Dolphins still led by seven, but from there Bridgeport went on a 14-0 nothing run to go in front by seven points. The Dolphins cut the lead to two, 73-71, with nine seconds remaining, but Amani Melendez closed out the victory from the line with a pair of free throws.

In addition to the big game from Alarcon in another double-double effort, the Dolphins got 14 points from Dana Phelan, 13 from Ashley Lambert, and 10 from Elizabeth Lofaro.  In addition to her 10 points, Lofaro had 5 assists, and Alarcon led the team in that department with 6. Melendez led the Purple Knights in scoring with 15 and Asya Brandon finished with 14, including 7-10 from the line. Brianna Meekins scored in double figures for the second straight game and finished with 13 points. Stephanie McBride finished just one point shy of a double-double for the Purple Knights as well. The Dolphins shot it very well in the game at 44% from the field and 46% from beyond the arc, but they could not overcome the 14-0 Bridgeport run in the final quarter during which they turned the ball over several times.

The Dolphins will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they take on the Bloomfield College Bears at 5:30 PM.
