GAMEDAY: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FACES WILMINGTON IN REMATCH OF 2021 OPENER

11/22/2022 1:00:00 PM

Wilmington, DE - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team is back on the road tonight as they travel to Wilmington, DE for a non-conference matchup with the Wildcats of Wilmington University.  The 0-4 Dolphins enter tonight's game still in search of their first win after they let a third-quarter lead get away on Saturday against East Stroudsburg.  The Wildcats also come in with a record of 0-4 and have dropped each of their first four games by at least 15 points.  These two teams have met three times before including a pair of games in the early 1990s, both won by Wilmington.  Most recently, the Dolphins picked up the victory in last season's opener when they defeated the Wildcats 65-63 to open the 2021 CSI Conference Challenge

The Dolphins were last in action on Saturday at home when they faced the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University.  After trailing for much of the first half, the Dolphins stormed back in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter and took a two-point lead into halftime, 32-30.  The Dolphins then scored the first five points of the second half to go ahead by seven, but that lead evaporated quickly and CSI ultimately fell by eight, 70-62.  The Wildcats also were last in action on Saturday when they took on another East Coast Conference opponent, Mercy College.  For the Wildcats, the 59-44 defeat was their fourth straight loss to open their season.

The Dolphins will be looking for a bounce-back effort from Jenalyse Alarcon who, despite only scoring two points on Saturday, still leads CSI in scoring with 15.5 points per game.  She is also shooting an incredibly efficient 63% from the floor and is leading the team in assists while averaging just one rebound shy of a double-double.  Ashley Lambert remains the Dolphins' second-leading scorer and is the only other Dolphin averaging double-figure at 10.3 points per game.  Lamber also leads CSI in three-point shooting among players with at least ten attempts from beyond the arc with a 36.4% mark from distance.  Noemia Massingue, Kyra Rose, and Amaya Jenkins will all be looking to build upon their best efforts of the season in Saturday's game against the Warriors.  Massingue finished with 15 points in just 21 minutes, Rose had 9 in only 20 minutes, and Jenkins had 8 in only 13 minutes.

The Wildcats are led in scoring by Amber Washington who is also their only double-digit scorer at 12.8 points per game.  She is also the team's leading rebounder grabbing 8.3 boards per game.  The big issue for the Wildcats offensively this season has been their poor shooting as Washington is one of only two players on the team shooting above the 40% mark.  The Dolphins are also shooting under 40% as a team, but have held opponents to a nearly identical shooting rate from the field.  For CSI, they will be looking to maintain consistency through four quarters which has been the biggest obstacle standing in the way of their first victory this season.
