DOLPHINS EARN THIRD STRAIGHT WIN WITH VICTORY OVER MERCY, 71-67

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team picked up their third straight win earlier tonight as they defeated the Mercy College Mavericks in their conference opener.  The 71-67 victory improved the Dolphins to 3-4 on the season and gets them off to a 1-0 start in conference play.  The Mavericks fall to 3-4 with the loss and begin the conference portion of their schedule 0-1 against the ECC.

Asha Talib got off to a strong start for the Mavericks early in the first quarter as she scored the team's first seven points.  For the Dolphins, Elizabeth Lofaro picked up right where she left off on Sunday as well and scored five quick points in the opening minutes.  Behind a good start from the field, the Dolphins led by as many as six points in the opening frame.  However, the Mavericks ended the opening quarter on a 6-0 run to even up the score at 16-16 after one.  It was a low-scoring second quarter that followed which was highlighted by a pair of threes from Gia Esposito for CSI.  Once again the Dolphins took the lead, this time by eight, but the Mavericks responded with an 8-0 scoring run to send the game to halftime even at 29-29.

The Mavericks would lead by a game-high four points on three separate occasions in the third quarter, but the Dolphins would ultimately get even in the final minute of a high-scoring period which saw both teams finish with 50 points.  In the fourth, the two teams remained close and neither side would lead by more than a pair until there were just over five minutes remaining.  With 3:33 to play, Esposito hit a three to put the Dolphins in front by four, and one possession later, Jenalyse Alarcon followed with another score to increase the lead to six.  Moments later, Kellie Nudd cut the lead in half with a three for Mercy and then made it a one point game with a layup the next time down the floor.  Ahead by one with under 40 seconds remaining, Alarcon put the Dolphins ahead by four with a three-pointer out of the corner as the shot clock was winding down.  From there, the Dolphins closed out the victory from the free-throw line.

Both Lofaro and Esposito scored 14 points to lead the Dolphins in scoring.  Alarcon notched yet another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Noemia Massingue added another 11 points.  Talib, who got off to a red-hot start for Mercy, finished with 15 points to lead the Mavericks.  Sara Hopkins scored 13, nine of those coming on three-pointers.  Taysha Bender added 10 more points and Nudd scored 11.  The Dolphins continued to shoot the ball well in the game and their 49% mark from the field combined with 47% from beyond the arc proved too much for the Mavericks to overcome.

The Dolphins will next be in action this weekend when they face St. Thomas Aquinas College on the road this Saturday at 1 PM.
