Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEES WIN STREAK END AT THREE WITH LOSS TO SPARTANS

Sparkill, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw their three-game win streak come to an end earlier today as they fell to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 82-59.  The Dolphins fall to 3-5 on the season and 1-1 against the East Coast Coast Conference with the defeat.  With the win, the Spartans are now 6-2 on the season and are also 1-1 against conference opponents.

The two teams exchanged baskets through the first three minutes, but from there the Spartans went on a 13-0 run and never looked back.  The Dolphins would get as close as eight in the final minutes of the quarter thanks in large part to ten first-quarter points from Noemia Massingue, but the frame ended with the Dolphins behind by 13.  The Spartans then opened the second on a 12-0 run to go ahead by 25, and the Dolphins would not get any closer than 20 in the first half after that.

Trailing by 21 at halftime, the Dolphins would draw as close as 15 on two separate occasions in the third quarter.  However, the Spartans surged ahead by 23 to end the third.  Despite 12 second-half points from Ashley Lambert, the Dolphins would not get within 20 points again and went on to lose by 82-59.

Lambert led the Dolphins in scoring with 17 points followed by Massingue who scored all 10 of her points in the first quarter.  Four Spartans scored in double-figures led by Erin Leary's 26 points.  Two Spartans registered double-doubles as well.  Karolina Jaruseviciute finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Sarah Ericson scored 10 and pulled in 12 boards.  On the glass, the Spartans held a 53-35 advantage over the Dolphins, and STAC shot nearly 13% more efficiently from the floor.  They also outshot the Dolphins from beyond the arc by 8% and hit 8 more free-throws in the game.  CSI played the game with a rotation of just eight players due to injuries, a departure from the typical ten-player rotation we have seen from them throughout the season.

Next up for the Dolphins is another conference matchup at home against the University of the District of Columbia on Tuesday at 5:30 PM.  That game will be the first game of a Men's and Women's Basketball doubleheader on Tuesday night at The Tank.
