Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS ON IN CLOSING MINUTES TO BEAT ALLIANCE, 70-65

Jersey City, NJ - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team picked up a non-conference win earlier tonight as they defeated the Warriors of Alliance University by a final score of 70-65.  The Dolphins snapped their two-game losing streak and improved to 4-6 with the win.  The Warriors fall to 1-6 with the loss and lose for the third time in four games against the Dolphins all-time.

Neither team was able to gain an advantage in the opening quarter as the two sides traded baskets for the first ten minutes.  Neither side would lead by more than three points in the opening period and the Warriors would end the period ahead by just one.  That lead quickly grew to six to open the second quarter, but a 10-4 Dolphins run evened up the score at 28-28.  Ultimately, the CSI three-point shooting became too much for the Warriors late in the half.  Both Gia Esposito and Dana Phelan hit three shots from beyond the arc in the quarter to propel the Dolphins to a four-point halftime lead.

CSI surged ahead by seven to begin the second half behind a 9-2 run and would go on to lead by as many as eleven in the third quarter.  Following another pair of threes late in the quarter, CSI would regain their eleven-point advantage heading into the fourth.  However, the Dolphins would only score three points in the first 6:15 of the final period allowing Alliance to get as close as three.  This is where the Warriors comeback bid would come to an end there as the Dolphins scored the next four and never led by less than five points again.

Phelan led the Dolphins in scoring with 14 points in the game on an efficient 4-9 from three-point range.  Not far behind were Kaia Johnson with 12, Esposito with 11, and Ashley Lambert with 11.  In addition to her 12 points, Johnson had 6 assists in the game.  Kyra Rose added 5 points and 12 rebounds as well in an effort which saw the Dolphins shoot nearly 44% from the field and 39% from the outside.  Nicole Blanch led the Warriors with 20 points including 6-13 on her three-point attempts.  Ashlyn Mesidor added a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double while shooting 6-13 from the field.  However, the rest of the Warriors did not shoot the ball well and Alliance could not overcome the disparity in the shooting numbers for the two sides.  The Warriors finished the game shooting just 35% from the field and 30% from three-point range.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Wednesday as they hit the road once again for a matchup with Caldwell University.  That game will tip off on Wednesday night at 5:30.
