Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CAN'T CLIMB OUT OF BIG SECOND-HALF HOLE AS COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT VS ALLIANCE

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team could not climb out of a massive hole in the second half against Alliance University earlier tonight as the Dolphins fell to the Warriors by a final score of 97-80.  The loss for the Dolphins, their first in the their last three games, drops CSI to 3-7.  The win snaps a six-game losing skid for Alliance to improve their record to 5-7.

The Dolphins led 5-0 to open the game and started 4-6 from the field, but not much else went CSI's way for the remainder of the first half.  The Warriors quickly turned what was a four-point deficit into a ten-point lead behind a 14-0 run.  With his team now trailing 19-9, Messiah Mallory snapped the scoring run at 14-0 with a basket, but from there the Warriors scored the next nine to go ahead by eighteen.  Alliance would go ahead by 21 three seprate times before halftime, and they ultimately took a ninteen point lead into the break.

The CSI defense struggled to get stops early in the second half and the Warriors immediately surged ahead by 28.  However, the Dolphins would begin to slowly work their way back from here and cut the lead down to thirteen with eight minutes to play.  Much like last week's game against UDC, the Dolphin defense was the catalyst in the bringing CSI back.  Chris Velasquez also had his best offensive game of the season and scored 22 points in the game as part of the CSI comeback bid.  Adefela Fakorode brought the Dolphins to within ten for the first time in the half on a three with seven minutes to play, but CSI could not get to within single digits at any point in the second half.  The comeback would ultimately fizzle out in the closing minutes and the Dolphins fell by seventeen points, 97-80.

The Dolphins had no answers for the duo of Joel Bailey and Isayas Aris in this game as the pair combined for 58 points and 17 rebounds on 21-28 shooting.  The pair also had the short Dolphins rotation contending with foul trouble throughout the final twenty minutes, and at one point in the second half, CSI had three players on the floor with four fouls.  Making matters worse for CSI, Bailey capitalized on every one of his chances at the line going 9-9.  For the Dolphins, Velasquez led the team in scoring with 22 and Fakorode had 12.  JJ Chestnut had one of his best games of the season as well finishing with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists.  Despite several solid individual efforts, the Dolphins simply couldn't slow down the Warriors for the majority of the game as Alliance shot nearly 60% and outrebounded the Dolphins by 15.

The Dolphins will next be in action on Saturday as they will hit the road for a matchup with Georgian Court University.
