Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LATE DOLPHINS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO FELICIAN, 95-86

Rutherford, NJ - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team dropped their final game before the holiday recess earlier this evening as they fell to Felician University by a score of 95-86.  The Dolphins fall to 3-9 on the season following tonight's loss while the Golden Falcons improved to 4-7 behind 41 points from Sean McCarthy.

The Dolphins never led in the game, but the two sides traded baskets through the opening minutes of the first half.  After CSI closed to within one to make it 8-7, the Golden Falcons went on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 14 points just over nine minutes into the game.  Eleven of the thirteen Felician points during that scoring surge were scored by Sean McCarthy who finished with 41 on the night.  Once the Dolphins finally snapped their scoring drought, they went on an 11-0 run of their own to make it three-point game.  CSI would stay within single digits until McCarthy's second three of the game put Felician up twelve with just over five minutes to play in the half.  The lead would not grow any further ahead of the break and the Dolphins trailed 50-38 at halftime.

The Dolphins pulled to within seven twice in the first three minutes of the second half, but another Golden Falcons scoring surge put them ahead by seventeen just with just under fifteen minutes to play.  Messiah Mallory helped lead the Dolphins back to within striking distance with ten second-half points, but the Dolphins did not pull to within single digits until there were four minutes remaining.  After two Chris Velasquez free-throws cut the lead to nine, the Dolphins went on a 7-2 run to make it a four-point game with 2:11 to play.  However, the comeback bid would end here as the Golden Falcons scored the next five points to secure a 95-86 victory.

Mallory led the Dolphins in scoring with 19 points and added 7 rebounds, but he was forced to contend with foul trouble late in the game.  Luis Armas scored 18 for the Dolphins and Velasquez registered a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double.  JJ Chestnut finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists on the heels of another ECC Rookie of the Week honor and David Shkolniy had 13 points in just 18 minutes off of the CSI bench.  Despite several strong individual efforts from the Dolphins, the big story following the game was Sean McCarthy's 41-point performance for the Golden Falcons.  McCarthy came in averaging just shy of 10 points per game and had started just twice this season ahead of tonight's game.  With his 41-point outburst, he became the second player in the history of Felician University Men's Basketball to score 40 points in a game.

Following two and a half weeks off for the holiday recess, the Dolphins return home for conference play on Friday, January 6, 2023 when they take on Daemen University.  That same weekend they will also face D'Youville University on Sunday at The Tank.
