Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL JUST SHORT AGAINST DAEMEN AS CHESTNUT SCORES CAREER-HIGH 27 POINTS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team played thier first game since mid-December earlier tonight as saw a late comeback bid come up just shirt against the Daemen University Wildcats.  Despite a career-high 27 points from JJ Chestnut, the Dolphins were sent to 3-10 with the loss and are now 1-3 against the East Coast Conference.  The Wildcats improved to 8-6 with the win and are now 2-3 in conference play this season.

The Dolphins scored the first seven points during what was yet another strong start to open a game.  The first two points of the game belonged to a debuting Jordan McCallister and the next five belonged to Bryce Waterman.  The Wildcats quickly responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead by three before the Dolphins tied the score on an and-one by Chestnut.  Following the Chestnut free-throw to even the score, Daemen scored the next ten points, their second 10-0 run of the half.  The Dolphins would cut the lead down to eight on three separate occasions, but CSI was unable to get any closer than that ahead of halftime and trailed 48-35 at the break.

McCallister and Chestnut combined to score the first ten points of the second half for the Dolphins as CSI immediately cut the Daemen lead to seven.  Messiah Mallory then added five quick points including a three-pointer that cut the CSI deficit to four.  Another layup by Chestnut brought the Dolphins within two, but CSI would never get any closer than that.  The Wildcats put together yet another timely scoring run, this time a 9-0 stretch, to go ahead by eleven.  However, the Dolphins also had another run in them and were able to cut a 16-point lead down to five with 26 seconds remaining.  On the ensuing possession, Chestnut was fouled with just one second remaining in the game as time ran out on the Dolphins comeback bid.

It was huge night for Chestnut who played the full 40 minutes for the seventh time this season and scored a career-high 27 points.  Mallory scored 13 before fouling out late in the game, Waterman finished with 12, and Luis Armas added 15 points in 36 minutes off the bench.  As a team, the Dolphins shot the ball incredibly well finishing the game shooting 53% from the field and 57% from beyond the arc.  Despite their great shooting numbers in a game where both teams attempted 57 shots, CSI attempted only 9 free-throws to Daemen's 20, and the Wildcats hit two more threes than the Dolphins.  CSI also had a tough time slowing down Dylan Fasoyiro who scored 31 points.  Andrew Mason's outside shooting was also key to Daemen's first-half run and he finished the game with 15 points including 3-5 shooting from three-point range.

The Dolphins will look to bounce back on Sunday as they will be back in action for another conference matchup with D'Youville University.  Tip off for the second game of Sunday's ECC doubleheader will be at 3:00 PM.
