Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LATE SPARTANS RUN DENIES CSI COMEBACK BID IN LOSS TO STAC, 66-52

Sparkill, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team fell to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College earlier today as they dropped their third consecutive game by a final score of 66-52.  The Dolphins are now 1-6 on the season and 0-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans move to 7-1 overall and remain unbeaten against the ECC with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

Much like they have several times already this season, the Dolphins got off to a red-hot start.  The Dolphins opened the game with five three-pointers in just over five minutes, three of those belonging to Luis Armas.  This marks the second time in as many games that Armas has connected on a trio of three-point attempts in the first half.  His third make from the outside put CSI up ten, 17-7, but the Spartans would close the half on a 24-10 run to take a four-point lead into the break.

Armas opened the second half with another three to bring CSI back to within one, but the Spartans would pull ahead by as many as eight with just over fourteen minutes to play.  From there the Dolphins continued to battle back and were able to cut the lead to two on an and-one by Michael Oyekanmi.  Just over 90 seconds later, the Dolphins found themselves behind by six again, but Armas hit another three to make it a one-possession game.  However, the CSI comeback bid would end here as the Spartans went on a 9-0 run to close out the victory, ultimately winning the game by fourteen.

Armas led the Dolphins in scoring with 19 points, all but one coming on three-pointers.  He shot 6-15 from beyond the arc and grabbed 7 rebounds as well.  No other Dolphin scored in double figures, but it was another double-digit rebounding effort for Messiah Mallory who grabbed 10 boards.  For the Dolphins, it was their worst shooting effort of the season as the team shot 32% from the field and 26% from three-point range.  Defensively, the team held the opposition to poor shooting for the second consecutive game as the Spartans shot 34% from the field and 33% from downtown.  However, 16 points from James Patterson and 11 more from Jordan Green were enough to help STAC to their second conference win.

The Dolphins are next in action on Tuesday against the University of the District of Columbia.  That game will be the back half of a CSI Basketball doubleheader and will tip off at 7:30 PM.
