Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

STIFLING DEFENSE AND 29-POINT EFFORT FROM MALLORY POWER DOLPHINS PAST UDC, 74-63

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team picked up their first conference win of the season this evening as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia by a final score of 74-63.  The win for the Dolphins is their second of the year and improves them to 2-6 overall, 1-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The Firebirds fall to 3-6 on the year and 1-2 against the conference.

The Dolphins got off to yet another strong start in this game, but this time it was behind their defense rather than their outside shooting.  Messiah Mallory scored the first seven points for CSI to open the game and would finish the first half with 20.  However, the story heading into the break was the stifling Dolphins defense which held the Firebirds to 27% shooting for the first 20 minutes.  The Dolphins shot over 41% from the field in the first half as well, and CSI led by fourteen at the break, 36-22.

The Dolphins would quickly extend their lead to 15 just two minutes into the second half, but the Firebirds cut that down to six within just five minutes.  Faced with the possibility of losing yet another double-digit lead, the CSI defense stepped up to another level of intensity.  Following a score by JJ Chestnut, the Dolphins would come away with steals on each of the next two trips down the floor for UDC.  CSI made the most of each of those turnovers and went ahead by twelve, never looking back from there.  The lead grew as high as 22 for the Dolphins, but a late UDC run would cut that in half.  Despite this, the result was never in doubt during the closing minutes and the Dolphins took the win, 74-63.

It was a season-high in scoring for Mallory who finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.  Chestnut added 15 points, 5 assists and 2 steals as well.  David Shkolniy and Chris Velasquez were also a key part of CSI's strong defensive effort as each finished with 3 steals.  Micah Campbell finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds for UDC.  Tevin Curtis also had 13 for the Firebirds and Torrence Horton finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds.  In addition to the stellar defensive effort for CSI, another key figure on the final stat line for the Dolphins was their 42 points in the paint.  They also had twice as many points off of turnovers and shot a far better percentage from the free-throw line.

The Dolphins will be back on their home floor this weekend as they take on American International College at The Tank on Saturday in a rare 2 PM start.
