Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

STRONG START NOT ENOUGH TO PROPEL DOLPHINS PAST UDC IN 73-63 LOSS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team dropped their second straight conference game tonight as they fell to Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia by a final score of 73-63.  The Dolphins are now 3-6 following the defeat, 1-2 against the East Coast Conference.  The Firebirds move above the .500 mark on the season and are now 5-4 overall.   They also break above the .500 mark in conference play as they are now 2-1 against the ECC.

The Dolphins got off to a strong start as they scored the game's first seven points.  Following a pair of UDC free-throws, the Dolphins would also score the next four points to make it an 11-2 game.  However, the Dolphins would only score two more points for the remainder of a very low-scoring opening quarter and led 13-7 after one.  The Dolphins would score the first six points of the second quarter as well, four belonging to Brianna Moore off of the CSI bench.  After the Dolphins went ahead by as many as 12, an 11-0 Firebirds run ultimately evened up the score at 21-21.  The two teams would trade baskets for the next couple of minutes, but UDC would take the lead for the first time on a Latavia Jackson three with under one minute remaining in the first half.  The 26-25 lead was UDC's first of the game, and after leading for the entire half, the Dolphins went into the break down by one.

The two teams came out of the locker room red-hot in the second half and combined to score 43 points in the third quarter.  Gia Esposito scored five of her fifteen points off the bench in that quarter, and the two teams were even at 47-47 through thirty minutes.  The Dolphins took the lead early in the fourth scoring the first two points of the quarter, but from there a 9-2 Firebirds run put UDC ahead by five.  The Dolphins immediately snapped the scoring run at seven, but just over a minute later, another 7-0 run put CSI behind by ten.  The Dolphins would pull to within five on two separate occasions after that, but they were never able to get within one possession the rest of the way.

Esposito led the way for CSI with 15 points off the bench, but no other Dolphin scored in double-figures.  For the Firebirds, Destiny Ryles did it all finishing the game with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.  The Firebirds also got 17 points from Tori Williams and both Latavia Jackson and Shanell Haskins scored in double-figures as well.  The deciding factor in the game was ultimately the outside shooting of the two teams.  Very evenly matched in just about every other statistical category, the Firebirds connected on six threes while the Dolphins hit just three shots from beyond the arc.

The Dolphins are back in action this weekend as they face Alliance University in a non-conference matchup Saturday night at 8 PM.
